dual core enabled games
31.05.07 at 09:08:50

Hey guys,

since I will be receiving my dualcore this week, I wanted to make a list of games that are known to support mulitple cores.

Anyone know of such a list??

quake4 for example..modern games usually have support, but the boost is not too big,20% at best..one exception: PCSX2 (playstation2 emulator).dualcore owners get a whopping up to 80% performance boost.

Supreme Commander. Especially noticable on large battlefields with lots of units (according to other people)

Although not games directly, the current Dual Core support in Video Drivers should get you a few % already (regardless of Game used)

so, lemme know if this is correct:

1: Dualcore enabled games will increase in fps when you actually have dualcore ( kind of no-brainer)

2: Through the drivers being multithreaded, preformance increases as well.

3: due to a dualcore, 1 core can be solely assigned to the game as where the other core can handle all the other crap running in the background, thus resulting in better fps ingame

Yep, sounds about right...

But also be aware of the Problems you may encounter.
MicroSoft in the past has created Bulletins for Dual Core related performance Problems and freezes/crashes.

However, the Patch they created (WinXP) was never released openly and remained avaible only upon request (they'd send it via EMail).
I believe this was the Bug of the Windows Kernel Task Scheduler "Performance loss due to Threads rapidly switching between Cores".
I assume it is integrated in some form in a recent Patch, not sure though.

Other than that, at least AMD Dual Cores can exhibit out of sync Timing errors when Win32's default Libraries are circumvented and the timing function is directly taken from the Cores. The AMD Dual Core optimizer fixes this by inplementing an additional entry in the boot.ini (WinXP).

----------------
I plan to update my Gaming Rig to Dual Core as well (Win2000 SP4), that's why I dug into this for potential show-stoppers.

Although I've read conflicting information on it, seems swapping out a Single Core CPU for a Dual Core can give the System serious trouble (including being unable to boot due to System Kernel still being setup for "Uniprocessor").
Apart from fixing it manually - which may or may not work -, a fresh Installation may be in order after the Upgrade.

I've read on anotehr forum, where I posted something similiar, that in order to get dualcore running correctly after upgrading from single core, you have to follow a few steps.

here's the link to the thread, might be a nice info regarding this for people on this board.

ya know what the worst part is?? I get to pick up my dualcore in the mail today after work, and this weekend I am away from home. Smiley

I'll be back on sunday somewhere, hopefully enough time to do the switch and relay my cables and all.
Cause I wanna clean up my case inside, put lots of wiring behing the motherboardplate, so.....may take a while.

will keep you guys posted.

Well falconfly did mention something in the post above - then there was a solution from AMD - a patch (and from M$). Are there any similar problems known to affect Intel=based systems?

Apart from the MicroSoft DualCore Fix (which as far as I have observed in various Forums can affect any Dual Core CPU) I haven't heard anything of a Timestamp sync error on the Core 2 Duo.

Overall recommendation found in many places is :
If the System is running up-to-spec performance and no problems noted - do not install the fix(es).
Seems not all machines are affected, some report only specific Applications/Games exhibiting problems, while other Games run perfect. Some even reported their Systems running fine with only isolated Troublemakers (Games) and witnessed a general instability after installing the Fixes.

For that reason, Task-Binding Utilities have been created to bind problematic Games' Tasks onto one core, which seems to do a good job on Games that are coded for single core anyway.

That 'should' be fixed by the MS Hotfix, but I haven't heard a clear line about that. People unaware of the potential Dual Core troubles usually have difficulties nailing down the cause of their Problems.

All that is valid only for WinXP, haven't looked into any Vista DualCore related info (which seems to have its very own performance Problems when exceeding 4 Cores, but that's still far from mainstream). Other reports about instability or sluggish System performance are too inconsistent to identify the exact cause.

well,

I installed my dualcore after I redid the wiring to make everything go behind the motherboard plate, looks very clean now. Smiley

Anyways, the cpu was recognized, I rebooted, made a new entry in the registry, and installed a patch and all is well now.

With my opteron 146 @ 2.5Ghz and X1950XT @ 675/2000 I scored around 3000 in 3dmark06, which was kind of ok, but not really.

Now I installed the x2 3800, clocked it up to 2.5Ghz, kept the videocard at default and my score went up to 5686, which is pretty nice I think.

All games run as smooth as they did when I had the opteron in here, so no performancedrop whatsoever.
Seems the patching has done it's job right.
