Title: 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP with dos glide games
Post by Justin on 02.05.10 at 01:39:18
Hello,

I bought a voodoo 5 5500 agp a little while ago and I can't get some glide games to run in pure dos mode. SET ssth3_sli_aa_configuration=0 works for some games (Carmageddon 1 for example) but not all (Lands of Lore 2 for example). Does anyone know more solutions to run DOS games in glide with a Voodoo 5? And is it possible to get SLI and Anti-Aliasing to work with DOS games? Lastly, why won't I see the 3Dfx logo with DOS games on my Voodoo 5? My 3D blaster banshee showed it and worked fine with DOS games.

Many thanks in advance,

Justin

Anything above Voodoo2 is not a good choice for pure DOS gaming, because the drivers do not have a proper GLIDE2X.OVL file, V3 and newer cards are meant for Windows gaming (glide2x.dll and glide3x.dll).

Some games might work (Carmageddon is a good example), but others won't work - the first Tomb Raider with glide patch won't work (as far as I remember).

Tomb Raider will work with Voodoo5 5500 IF you use the Voodoo Rush patch (I kid you not):

Okay, I'll try that patch. Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe I'll build another computer with Voodoo2 Sli.

Question:

I need one 2D card for use with the voodoo 2's right? Does it matter if that other card also supports 3D? A Diamond Viper II is the only card I have and it's AGP; can 2 Voodoo 2's work with an AGP card?

Back again,

So I've got a voodoo2 now and I'm using it with my Viper 2 Z200 AGP card.

Of course, I'm having problems. I can't run any DOS game (again sigh).

When I start one, all I get is a black screen. I don't see the 3dfx logo either. Windows games work though.

glide2x.ovl is in my Windows directory and the game detects my card but still it won't work.

Thanks in advance.

glide2x.ovl should be placed in your game folder (in the same folder with the exe of the game)

Then, you might want to check c:\autoexec.bat and c:\config.sys. A google search with keywords "3dfx" "autoexec.bat" "config.sys" might help you.

Now, for Carmageddon I reccomend searching for a file named carmav2.zip, it's the best 3dfx version. If you get a black screen you should restart your computer and try again, Carma locks the V2 cards at startup and a restart is needed.

Hi,

Thanks for the response RaverX!

I found that reducing my CPU clock rate from 700 to 300 fixes a little.

I now see the 3Dfx logo and I can run lands of lore 2 but the keyboard is extremely laggy (the game keeps turning to the left) in DOS (even with 700 mhz) and the computer locks up after 1 minute of playing.

Carmageddon 2 won't start anymore by the way.

This is retarded, why would CPU frequency make a difference.

Also, the v2-auto.inf file doesn't make any difference, I rem'd out the SET variables for dos compatibility and the game still ran.

Do you know of anything more? I tried some config.sys and autoexec.bat files.

Btw: Do you have a voodoo2? And do you have a fast CPU with it? Maybe my CPU is too fast for it......

This is why people are still holding onto those 486 and P1 rigs. Clock rate is key when it comes to DOS games.

if you don't have a dedicated dos machine (p1/voodoo1 as already mentioned),it would probably be easier to run the game(s) via some build of dosbox that has support for dosglide emulation,or try dgvoodoo glide wrapper..

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I know that but I don't like emulators. They always lag or have errors. I'd rather not play than on an emulator.

Still, I recall playing old dos games with a voodoo banshee and a 2000 mhz cpu. Everything was fine.

Perhaps my motherboard is not compatible with a V2 (Asus Cuv-4x)?

And does anyone know of people with a voodoo2+fast cpu?

My V2's ran fine on a AMD 2500+ system, extra cooling is required on a modern system though as they will get very hot.
