Title: Multilanguage 3dfx-tools
Post by grunw on 13.07.04 at 07:47:59
Hi, I'm wondering if there is a way to make the 3dfx-tools installer to install the english version instead of the spanish version in my system.

The 3dfx-tools version i had for my banshee installed the spanish version (with all the text badly translated, as usual)

Are the 3dfx-tools included in the 1.04.01b avaliable on falconfly archive multilingual? if so.. is there any way to fool the installer to make it install the original english stuff?

When i did install 3dfx-tools for my banshee i tried to fool the installer setting my regional settings in win98 to US or UK, but it didnt work.. it still installed the spanish version.

I prefer always the original english version on games and software, the translations are usually poor.

Yes, the Tools Version you mentioned are Multilangual.

But I think the Installer makes its own Selection, based on the language the OS was Installed with.

I'm not sure if there's any other way to force another Languager, other than renaming the Language Directories found in the Temp Directory, that the 3dfx Tools Installer creates.

That should work though, I think :)

If I understand you the installer prior to install 3dfx-tools itself create several directories on Windows/temp?
like: spanish/english etc..
or ES/EN etc..?
Then the method you suggest is to halt the installer (abort the installation at some point) and rename the corresponding folders, if so.. at which point of installation should i abort? will the installer delete these folders if i abort?

Is there any way to extract the files from the installer, and install them?

thanks

Yep, that's how it works.

As soon as the Installer is "ready to go", but has not started physical installing yet, it needs the fully extracted Files in the Temp Folder.

Just Copy those to a safe location, since Aborting or finishing Installation will delete those Files there.

The Language Files/Directories are sorted by numbers (Country codes).
Just identify what you need, and replace those.

And yes, there are "ready to use", e.g. fully extracted 3dfx Tools Versions existing in several Drivers. Those you can easily modify prior installation if needed. (just look for one with pre-extracted language Files)

I have been watching the files inside Data.cab file and I see no language specific indications or anything like it... but, opening the setup.ini (outside the CAB file) i probably found the ideal solution to my problem:

[Startup]
CmdLine=
Product=3dfx Tools
PackageName=3dfx Tools.msi
MsiVersion=1.10.1029.1
[glb]EnableLangDlg=N[/glb]

My guess is that if I set EnableLangDlg to "Y" a nice language selector dialog would appear on the start of 3dfxtools installation! Awesome!

Unfortunatelly, I have everything installed properly now on my system and don't want to reinstall 3dfxtools because most of this kind of things leave registry and files "residues" behind after uninstalling them, and that is the "cultive" of an unstable system my experience says. (please let me know if 3dfxtools installer/uninstaller is specially clean on this subject)
Also I dunno if the 3dfxtools uninstaller will also remove the "core" driver files (display driver, glide etc..) too.

Anyway.. can any of you modify this value (from N to Y) on setup.ini and install 3dfxtools? If you do please post here the results (language selector dialog appears or not) to let me know if im right or wrong about it.

Title: EXAMPLE OF CRAPPY TRANSLATION
Post by grunw on 23.07.04 at 22:46:42

As an example of my reason for wanting the original english stuff I will comment here the dumb translations on the overclock tab on the spanish version of 3dfxtools:

"Velocidad de Clock de la Carta de Graphica"
No comment.. this is not english neither spanish, so maybe a new language.

"Información Del Reloj De los Graficos"
Although correct spanish, kinda stupid translation.

"La velocidad de reloj del valor por defecto para esta tarjeta es 166 megaciclos"
If I didn't already know what this is supposed to mean, i would hardly understand this one. Embarassing. Didn't know a default value could have a clock speed!

"Inutilize V Sync"
An automatic translator was used or what? Weird way to simply say "Desactivar" or anything like it, but not "inutilize" damnit!

*lol*

Thank god you've never seen the SiS Xabre or Volari Driver translations ;)

(they're the most ultimately weird "translated" Drivers on earth, e.g. Overclocking is translated like a Star Trek time warp or a Time Machine *g*)

ROFL! ;D

Hey Falcon, maybe you should start a thread in the "THIS & THAT" area called... ::)

...CR4PPY DRIVER TRANSLATIONS! ;D ;D

Should turn up a few laughs (include screenies though!) ;)

I could, but you'd need to understand German in order to get  the Joke.
With some Settings, I was absolutely clueless what on earth they could mean.

PS.
Rumors have it, that google initially planned to include a new advanced language Tool featuring :

- SiS > English
- SiS > German
- SiS > Spanish
etc...

They later abandoned the plans when their "any language > simplified SiS" Feature turned out as impossible to realize, however  ;D
