Title: Parental controls for XP.....
Post by jandarsun8 on 04.03.07 at 17:11:13
Hey guys, gotta  a question. I've got a Vista box that my girl friend is using for her kids (12 & 9). The Vista box has some cool parental control's as far as what websites on a black and white list and even limiting the actual programs installed on it. Problem is half the kids school programs are having compatibility issues with it (beta rc1 still not the retail version). I've got to wipe it and put XP back on it. Any of you guys using a lock down utility for XP that actually works? I know Norton's has one and we tried it once but before I renew that, I'd like to see what else it out there.

Why not just get her a copy of Vista since she already has started using some of the new features?

vista? ouch :-X

I have a younger bro&sis, and I have never used any type of parental control,I have simply told them what kind of sites they shouldnt visit, and if they did (bro watching some girls with uhhh, wardrobe shortages),I just made sure they knew that I knew, and that I will take further steps if they wont quit.worked well..

Anyone who suggests buying a copy of Vista REALLY needs their head examined! ::)

@gamma742 - are you sure you're feeling okay? ???

Seriously, because... :P

1) It's extortionate for price :o

2) It's about as compatible as fairy wings on a cement truck ::)

3) It has more bugs than a roach motel :P

Vista isn't worth it for at least a year or until Vista SP1... :-X

Well yeah, that's what we're having issues with is the kids School programs and granted it's RC1 (that last build)  but getting a retail one for that machine isn't really worth it (minium specs for testing purpose's- we just don't have a machine for them to run it on really and putting it on the main box isn't an option).

The problem is that the 12 year old thinks she knows everything and telling her no about going to any one site just makes her do it more plus she's hitting her hormone stage and mood swing galore.  :P  There's more to it then just that, but that's kind of the jest of it.

I hate having to put those limitations there in the first place but her mom gets frustrated with all the crap that ends up on the machines.

heh A friend of mine at my computerclub has Vista as well the  buisness one and some games didn't even bootup propperly.

after playing Call of Duty 2 we switched to Fear Combat then Unreal Tournament Game Of The Year Edition 1999 and while switching to that game it had to be run under 98SE compabillity mode otherwise it wouldn't even boot, even my Voodoo 5 5500 PCI Macintosh couldn't be installed, it's that crappy with older hardware, imho Vista is totally useless for now on, I'm sticking with the best NT os'es out there Windows 2000 Professional + Rollup1 for Service Pack 4 and Windows XP Professional + Service Pack 2, they run fine on all systems with ATi as 3dfx cards as all 80 games I have here, Windows 2000 Professional is stillt he fastest one though, in most cases it's about 5% to 10% faster than XP pro in older games heh, just because it's alot lighter built, lesser eyecandy stuff and no crappy animations, Win2K Pro is still the best overall out there.

I rather wait till Servce Pack 2 is out for Vista, since it's packed with strange anomalies and runtime problems and most important of all I want 100% 3dfx glide support, as long that doesn't happen no Vista here hahah ;D

it's more like Asta La Vista here ;D
