RAM questions...........
25.11.07 at 07:50:34

I have some questions about computer RAM but I wasn't sure where to put this, so if it is the wrong section, I apologize.

I currently use an old pos of a computer that has 128megs RAM (2x64 pc100RAM).  Does anyone know if they made any larger than 64megs chips in that type or RAM?  The board in my computer also has 4 72pin I believe (the three inch long ram I think) as well.  What if I can find any would be the largest RAM memory size I could find in that type of RAM?

I also managed to scrounge some 84pin ram from a dump.yeah I know, but I'll take what I can get..the price was right.....I scrounged several 84 pin ram SImms, including two Hyundai 9720 RAM (32meg) and two  Hyundai 9750 84pin RAM of an as of yet undetermined RAM amount.  What can I expect from the 9750 as per it's amount of memory?

there is SD-RAM up to 1024
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/details.html?articleId=35604

but you have to look for SingleSided or DualSided
most old baord are donr run with this big memory or only use the first 128 or 256MB

old technology

72pin memory is even older
knowen as EDO-Memory

hope you understand what i mean

SDR-SDRAM is available in 1024MB DIMM for sure. I have two lying around but in normal desktop systems they are useless since those chipsets can't address so much memory Roll Eyes.

The 72 pin banks are used for EDO SIMMs which are available up to 64MB per SIMM if I'm not mistaken.

I think the 64 meg ones are single sided but don't hold me to that right now, I have to check.

As for the 72 pin....I think the largest I have seen is 8 meg but I am not that well versed on RAM.

Checked with my PCWizard program.the 64 meg ram is pc125 SDRAM.I thought it was pc100 but I gyuess not........but the one by Micron Technology is able to run at 100 and 125 mhz frequencies.

Ok..if my board is old....wich it is.......well I think it was upgraded in 1998 or so.nto sure....what kind of RAM would work in it, size wise...even if I could get two 128 meg ones, or two 256 ones I'd be happy....

What chipset does your motherboard have?
This is the second-most important piece of information you need to know when upgrading your memory.

(the most important being what kind of memory Wink)

The ram is:

A 64 meg Micron technology pc125

and an IBm 64 meg pc 125

For some reason though my PCWizard program can't determine much about that IBM one...

As for the chipset of my mother board.I dunno I'll have to check.where on it would it be posted that I could see it?

I might have that alrweady.gimme a sec....

Darn.I got rid of it.gonna get it again...be right back

OK.........

My CPU is an Intel Celeron 533mhz Mendochino 66.8 mhz bus speed

My mainboard is an Intel i440LX
memory type pc66 SDRAM Non-ECC

Does that help?

But.the pc125 Ram I have works fine..is that because the ram can downclock itself?

If your motherboard has 3 memory slots then you can place a maximum of 384MiB ram in it.

I don't know if it would support 256MiB modules but wouldn't take a chance. 2x 128MiB should do fine though.

Be aware, Intel chipsets do not support 32Mx4 modules.
Get 8Mx16 or 16Mx8

(number of chips on module(#M) x datalines per chip (x#))

SDR-SDRAM is backwards compatible, 133MHz can also work fine on lower speeds.

Ok..not sure about some of the stuff you mentioned..but I will verse myself on it so I understand.  But...no, my machine has 2 84 pin slots (where my 128megs of ram are, so all of those slots are used) and 4 72 pin slots, all of them are unused at the moment.

Wait.if you mean the amount of chips on the individual SDRAM's, I am pretty sure each one has 8 on it...

If there are 8 chips of ram on each module, then you have 8Mx16 memory.

Anyway, if there's already 128MiB in each slot then there is probably nothing to upgrade. It would be a waste of money to find out if 256MiB modules work.

I'd save up my money and buy a new (or not new) system. Prices on older systems, even newer ones dropped significantly since the introduction of Intel's Core2Duo processor.

My bad Tongue
Anyway. if you really want to upgrade this system I'd recommend getting two second-hand 128MiB modules.

You can't run the 84 and the 72 pin slots at the same time. Like someone already said, your best bet would be to pick up some used 128 Sd PC100 memory off of say... eBay?

I have a stick of 256 PC100 SDram but I doubt it would work in an LX motherboard. Donno  Undecided
