voodoo 3 driver
24.09.04 at 09:08:50

I've been messing around with this for weeks; all I want is a @#^&*?!!! driver for my voodoo 3 video card that works!  I'm sick of these vertical lines on my monitor!  I downloaded one today, an old one, from this website and it showed up on my desktop as a document!  Totally unusable.  What is up with that?!?  My monitor hasn't had this problem with any other computer that's been linked to it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  This is ridiculous, and I've long since lost patience with it.  I'll be thankful for any advice whatsoever.

...and what exact Driver did you attempt to download ?

I know some Browsers have Problems with handling .rar (WinRAR) Archives, those would need to be downloaded via "Save as" instead of directly clicking it, in case of such Problems...

No, PATIENCE, I haven't had that opportunity.

I dowloaded 3dfx Voodoo 3 v1.07.00, FALCONFLY.  I'm using AOL.  I thought that I did use the save it option.

I wonder if PATIENCE is on to something.  Nothing I try works very well with my card.  Not Omega, not Amigamerlin.  If I avoid the 3d hardware altogether, by using one of the standard drivers on my machine, the display is nice and clear.

I opened up my machine to look at the 3dfx card.  I pulled it out of its slot, wrote down some numbers, and then reinserted it.  When I turned the computer back on again, the monitor was very clear, and it stayed clear for a while.  Now, things have gone back to looking as they always look.  Vertical lines, the partial outline 'ghosts' of windows I've closed, that sort of thing.

I may just have to live with it; after all, this computer was given to me.  What do you guys think?

Not sure, but from the looks of it, it might be overheating...

Voodoo3 cards are known to become excessively hot when used in some modern Systems.

Maybe just check the Card's passive Cooler temperature after a few minutes of 2D operation.
I can become quite warm (even very warm), but should never be too hot to touch.

If found hot enough to bake an egg, you'll either have to improve the surrounding Cooling (depends on how well the Airflow is in your Case), or strap-on a Fan onto the passive Cooler of the Voodoo3.

(latter was a common way to cool down an otherwise overheating Voodoo3, due to the Heatsink construction quite easy and cheap to implement)

PATIENCE, your first question isn't clear.  Close again the machine?

I don't understand your second question.  Overclocked the card?

Yeah, I'd stick with that driver you mentioned, except for the fact that it showed up on my desktop in document format when I downloaded it!  I can't use it at all!

As you may have guessed, I'm not even close to being a programmer, and it seems that I'm not a very good user, either.

FALCONFLY, I haven't checked the temperature of the video card, but as I mentioned earlier, I removed it from my machine recently, and if it had been hot I would have noticed that, I reckon.

By the way, maybe you guys can tell me a little about Voodoo cards in general.  Will all of them work on a 500 mhz computer like mine?  If so, maybe I should buy another one.

Just re-download it and make sure your System handles .zip Files correctly.

It's been downloaded far more than 30000 times, and this is the first time I heard anybody having those Problems (?)

Really, FALCONFLY?  That's amazing.  It also doesn't surprise me one bit.  Leave it to me to be the first!  I seem to have a knack for finding problems that no one has ever heard of!

Now, if I could just capitalize on this quality of mine somehow, I could turn it to my advantage.

Anyway.  Thanks for your help, people.  I do appreciate it.  I'll spend some time trying to learn more about what I'm doing, and maybe I'll get things squared away.  This is, if nothing else, an educational experience, and I should to try to remember that when I get frustrated.
