Title: Voodoo5 & Win2003 Server Post by Micha on 26.05.04 at 17:12:46
alright, here's the problem:
I've added a tnt2 to my server w/ windows 2003 server, installed various detonators, but it's always the same: i can't apply direct3d support (even if hardware acceleration for graphics is activated & set to max) and the detonator shows driectx vers. 3 under directx 8.1 (not under directx 9). so iv'e decided to put in my good ol' voodoo5 and now my questions: 1. will direct3d be supported under any driver for this card? 2. which driver? ;) help appreciated, thanks |

Not tried it yet mate.
My question is, why are you using 2003 Server? Doesn't strike me as the multimedia platform. The only thing I hve found it useful for so far is using it for Active Directory domains and improved connectivity to the latest version of Microsoft Exchange. |

yeah, and it's simply faster for home networks (at least to me) and more comfortable, as it has much improved drivers..regarding winxp which isn't very glad w/ my network-bridge from the 1000 to a 100 mbit/s connection (its 2 others pc's there)
it's just the thing that want to use the server also for gaming with friends - just some sorta classic-ut etc.. |

Ah, then you may be better running 2003 after all!
Definite improved network performance. ;) Just configuring the 2003 services to get the best performance out of your network games can be a bit of a hassle sometimes. Good luck anyway! P.S: Not had much experience with the TnT2 card. Are the Detonator drivers fully supporting Win2003? Direct3D support may be a configuration or service disabled by default for Win2003! |
Title: Re: Voodoo5 & Win2003 Server Post by Micha on 29.05.04 at 13:05:22
yeah, by standard it's disabled but you can configure hardware support just as under any other windows system...so, no problem.
well, i tried different detonators but it's always the same: no d3d support shown under dxdiag. i bet at least the newest drivers should support win2k3 ::) as it worked w/ a radeon 9000 --> full d3d support hint: win2k3 should also work w/ winxp (& perhaps w/ win2k) drivers as it uses the same system core..so what to do w/ my voodoo5 now? |

Build a GlideBox?;)
Or sell it? :-[ |
Title: Re: Voodoo5 & Win2003 Server Post by Micha on 29.05.04 at 14:09:24
i'd never sell it! ;D
i just want to use it for a while longer..but not in glide box (maybe some time later --> some months at last ;) ) so this server thingie is the best at the moment but i need advice which drivers to use under win2k3 ??? ??? ??? |

Sorry mate, I can't help ya. What drivers have we got out at the minute that support 2k3?

Hmm, I would say (officially) : none
Your best bet would be to try the latest WinXP Drivers, but chances are you possibly have to override Win2003 safety features (after all, Driver is not WHQL, and is probably not accepted by Win2003 by default). Pretty experimental I'd say, but you're welcome to submit the first Win2003 3dfx Driver if it works or tell us how you did it ;) |

alright, reconsidered this project (w/o realizing it ;D ) and a another question came up:
is there a tool to disable the driver-must-be-whql-certified feature in win_server2k3? cause with enabled whql-check there is no way to install any 3rd-party driver. :-[ second thought: will windows 2k3 recognize a v5 5500 by default, as in win xp? if yes, which apis would be supported? |

Hm, there should be an Option like that, but it's likely deeply hidden, or possible via manual Tweaking I guess.
If the V5 has generic Driver support (I doubt it), it would be for 2D only, or have minimal DirectX Support at best. |

This is a problem I have had many people aske me. ;D Unfortunately, I have never managed to find it, if such a function exists. :( This is how secure they have made Win2003! >:( A little too much security, and in the wrong direction, I think! :-X I was going to say try http://www.annoyances.org/ but I don't think they support Win2003 or anything later than 2000. Don't know if this is any good to you regarding Direct3D enabling: http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/hardwareacc.htm |
