driver installations under XP
25.07.04 at 22:11:20

Ok, there's been some new driver updates (the mesa fx series along with the new evolution drivers) and I'm wondering what the installations are like for both under XP. I've got a 98 box, that has a XP 2400+, 768 DDR 3200, 80 hard drive, but with Win 98 limitations with it (not reconizing all the ram, etc. etc.) I'd like to actually use the thing. I'm using my V5 in it and I'm wondering if I throw XP on there, what kind of issues I'm going to have. The drivers from 3dfx Underground had you doing some file changes and what not to really get them to work right. Is this the same case? Just wondering what I'm in for when I do this ahead of time. thanks.

Did you try limiting the VCache entry in the win.ini ?

I've read alot of Users were able to utilize 640MB, 768MB, or even 1GB of RAM that way.

The 3DFX-U/3dHQ drivers are still the best to-date imho.

They didn't require any editing on my system, the thing works out of the box for users who know how to properly install drivers.

Anyhow, 2k/xp get the most attention when it comes to driver development, if any - you will only benifit from switching to XP

Hm, for Gaming and latest Drivers, XP might be indeed an Option for the future.

But it comes with a hefty price :

- most insecure OS ever seen on face of earth
- massively Spyware/Malware infested

I've sworn to my live, that Win2000 was the last MicroSoft OS I've ever installed (which is without massive manual intervention as well as security catastrophy, and SP4 integrates lots of the Malware found in XP as well)

lol thanks for the tips guys. I do network support for about 550 pc's all running either 2000 (desktops) or xp (on the laptops) so I know the ups and down's of both. No, Falcon, I haven't tried that yet. Haven't really worked with 98 that much since 2000 came out (been gaming on that for the most part since it came out). I was how ever under the impression that 98 will only utilize roughly 256 megs of ram, but if Falcon or Patience's ideas works, then I'll just do that. XP is a pretty good OS, but you have to tweek the hell out of it to get it fast and stable (not to mention running Win updates every other day). Cutting off half of the services, disabling half of the graphical stuff XP comes default with (shadows on mouse cursor for instance). After cutting off that, cutting off the windows sound scheme and changing some other things, it boots up in about 30 seconds and havent' had any problems with it yet. I'd like to be able to do this with the 98 box, but I'm going to try Falcon's idea first since I won't have to reload everything then.
