A treat for myself
15.07.07 at 14:43:58

A few of you know that I have been going through some difficulties here at home.. which are finally starting to get resolved...so as a treat to myself this weekend I have purchased a 37" HD Magnavox LCD TV.

...

Currently resting on top my grandmothers cedar chest, sorry for the dust!

...

The forum in all it's 720 x 400 glory.

Currently I'm tinkering with settings and such, this LCD might actually go back as I'm not all the pleased with the PC output. Currently the only way for me to get a signal in from a PC is through the S-video. I could have purchased a LCD with a VGA-15 built in but the picture on this unit was so superb I could not resist and have 90 days to try. I can always return the brute for a different model and just might go to the store with a laptop and test the displays.

Another option is to get a video card with DVI and get a DVI -> HDMI adapter and see if there is a big difference.

Watched part of Saving Private Ryan last night, man the picture quality was just amazing.

Gary

P.S. The rest of the "multimedia center" is a Phillips 5 channel DVD/tuner, Sony VCR, Sony Tuner, Technics CD player, Sony cassette. THe PC is a SFF Shuttle with an AMD 3400+ running Windows 2000 with a gig of ram.

The idea with the PC is that I can stream DVD movies off the hard drive and not worry about physical media.

It's good to hear that your status is resolving Gary, it has been along winding road but I'm happy for you and I'm proud to see you in a much happier state. 8)

Nice thing with that Shuttle, does it have a Raid5 setup? so if a HDD fails that you won't have to build the whole raidsetup as the entire installation ?

Windows 2000 Pro good choice Wink

@Gary - good to hear things are calming down. Wink

I'd personally go with LCD over Plasma. Regardless of type - plasma still suffers from burn-in... Roll Eyes

The picture of the plasma screens I looked at just don't "look" right to my eyes for some reason, I like the sharper LCD's.

Update- Hooked up a PC using the HDMI port with my 6600GT driving through the DVI output at 1280 x 720.

WOW

SWEET! I need to get a low powered AGP board with DVI output for the shuttle box now... DVI/HDMI rocks hard.

the problem is that GeForce 7 series & 8 series are the only GeForce types that have true HDCP acceleration, which give the advatages of HDMI like ATi's X1K series & HD2.xx series do.

The Geforce cards below the 7 series don't have this feature thereby lowering the image quallity Wink

just get a low powered GeForce 7600GT with HDMI out and then you can benefit the full usage of your big telly as the HDCP extra's Smiley
http://xtreview.com/addcomment.php?id=549&view=asus-7600gt-hdmi-review
so the advantage here is that you will have a pure HDMI to HDMI connection for your GeForce 7600GT HDMI card to your big screen TFT Smiley

Don't care, it's just for playing ripped movies off the harddrive and I don't want to blow up the 250 watt power supply.

The GF2MX that is in the now works great, just doesn't have DVI out.

Find out soon enough, has to be better than the S-video output at any rate.

For $10 how can you go wrong? Can always throw it back on Ebay.
