Title: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 12.09.06 at 01:38:10
No clues just yet as to what it is... ;)
(It isn't 3Dfx related though, so that's why it's in the "This & That" area) ::) Stay tuned... ;) |

Me too, have to wait till I gather a few more pieces before dropping any clues ;-) |

Ok, question here. If neither one of you two are dropping hints on what your doing, but "your doing something", isn't that a hint to begin with? :P Just thought I'd ask about that one. Paul, if your planning on a hostile take over of Nvidia (AMD already got ATI) let us know about it before hand though, k? ;D

Just in case people begin to speculate... ::)
I have no idea what @Gary is up to and he has no idea what my 'something' is. :P They are separate 'something(s)'. :D |

The suspense is killin' me.
30 days before Christmas (or was it the 3dfx closure) Now that was exciting. I would check the web page every morning to see what was being revealed. |

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by jandarsun8 on 14.09.06 at 06:07:01
ROFL!!
We kind of set the date to a "someday" status. We'll get married but when..... we're not sure yet. Neither one of us is in a hurry. I didn't spend 1400$ on a ring for nothing and I don't see her going anywhere any time soon so things are cool. Besides, we've got paul's "thingy" and gdonovan's "somethingy" to look forward too. LOL LOL |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gamma742 on 14.09.06 at 06:46:14

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 15.09.06 at 10:39:28
heh a Dual PentiumII/!!! or Pentium II/!!! Xeon based board which could obtain a max ram of 2048MB ECC Reg PC-100/133 with the Intel i440GX chipset for SMP.
Looks like an EPoX or MSI branded board. |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 16.09.06 at 02:05:54
I'm guessing @Gary's 'something' is either Quantum 3D related or Primary Image related... ;)
...both of them used dual CPU boards in their systems. :) As for mine...it'll be one or more weeks before I have the PSU for the 'thing' I'm building. ::) It's essentially finished, but I've got it hooked up to an old AT PSU at the moment - which works but looks untidy! :P |

Load testing the power supplies now- I have the KT-266 platform with an AMD 1800+ running Quake3 in a window with a V5-5500 with everything turned on while Toast loads the cpu at 100%.
So far the voltages look stable. |

yeah I wonder if it can do FSAA x4 & FSAA x8 like the 8164 can :) since a Merc setup can do FSAA x2 & x4 even Motion Blur, I wonder what that 4116 has in petto, we all would wonder this 8)

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by jandarsun8 on 27.09.06 at 22:41:05
um, kind of confused on the power supply. Isn't that a regular ATX PS? What's the difference between that and something you can buy off of the self (serious here, what's the difference?)?

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Eye-Q on 27.09.06 at 23:02:42
Normally the 3.3V- and 5V-rails at a PSU around 430 watts have about 25-30 Amperes but this PSU has 40 Amperes each at the 3.3V- and the 5V-rail but "just" 20 Amperes at the 12V-rail (for comparison: a Seasonic S12-430 has 30A each at the 3.3V- and the 5V-rail but two 12V-rails with 14 respectively 15A).
Does the hardware need such a high amount of power at the 3.3V- and the 5V-rail? Or do you build another system which has been sold in that configuration with that PSU? |

Close, very close. I'm assembling a system that was to be sold and had been seen in prototype form. |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 28.09.06 at 00:11:24
Is it another Merc' system? ???
==EDIT== Just looked at your MERC "games tested" page and noticed you had some problems getting U.T. 2003 to start (at all). :P There 'is' a software driver for U.T. 2K3 or 2K4 (can't remember which just yet...) ::) I'm away from my main PC at the moment - but I'll have a look when I get home and update later! ;) |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by NitroX infinity on 28.09.06 at 00:22:45
Is it a Q3D system?
AAlchemy 4xxx anything to do with it? |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gdonovan on 28.09.06 at 00:31:56 wrote on 28.09.06 at 00:22:45:
Yes and no, not a 4xxx system. |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 28.09.06 at 01:10:28
a setup for the Voodoo5 6000 Rev.A1 1500 or isn't it 3dfx based?
unless if it was meant to be sold then a 6K wouldn't be it either, hmm it is something from Quantum 3D let's see, it has Dual Pentium !!! S.E.C.C.II layout board, an intel chipset might be i820 or iGX440 something in that direction? Anyways it is SMP based, dunno if it is 3dfx or nVidia based heh |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gdonovan on 28.09.06 at 01:22:29
No, it would not be fully compatible with the 1500, Intel based chipset remember?
|
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 28.09.06 at 01:26:57
oh yeah true there hehe :) hmm Voodoo3 based then? or Voodoo 5 5500 AGP + DVI based :) heh too many odd idea's I have LOL ;D

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gamma742 on 28.09.06 at 02:43:38
Not you Obi :)
We're just guessing, Gary's dropping the hints. Like yes and no to the two part questions. I'd rather figure it out by pics. Like piecing together a puzzle ;D |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 28.09.06 at 02:54:27
Hmm...so it's a Q3D 'case' but without Q3D hardware... :o
Anyhow...for your MERC games section - I found the UT2003 'software' renderer. :D There's some INI configuring involved...but it's simple stuff! ;) GO HERE: - http://unreal.epicgames.com/oldnews4.htm Search the page for "pixomatic" and download the ZIP file with the driver. :) Good luck with running UT2K3 on the MERC! ;D |

There's only one other system I can think off that would require such a PSU. And I simply refuse to believe that you have 4 AAlchemy 8xxx cards :-X |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 28.09.06 at 12:32:44
not an AALchemy 8464 setup you would need a totally different PSU and PSU setup for that ;) do remember that the 8164 needed a speacial PSU, "A serious warning though as the power supply for the video board is rated for 75 amps @ 2.9 volts, it has 75 AMPS on the 2.9V feed which is the core feed for the 8 VSA-100 chips.", though there are newer based ones with later based power up modules true there, but still if you want to power up 4 8164's as an 8464 setup you would deffintiely need alot more than just a single 425 watt PSU ;)

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 29.09.06 at 12:00:20
I also remembered this heh :-X
Gary wrote the following: "I'm assembling a system that was to be sold and had been seen in prototype form." The NitroX Infinity asked if it is a Quantum3D system as his first question: wrote on 28.09.06 at 00:22:45:
1. Is it a Q3D system? his second was: 2. AAlchemy 4xxx anything to do with it? So Gary answers with Yes for question 1 and no for question 2 ;) Look: wrote on 28.09.06 at 00:31:56:
The Paulpsomaidis asks: wrote on 28.09.06 at 02:54:27:
and till then no answer, so what I think it is is the following: It is a Dual Pentium2/3 based rig since it has Dual SECC/SECCII connectors, it can house up to 4x 512MB PX-100/133 or 4x 1024MB PC-100/PC-133 ECC REG ram modules, since that some duallie P2's and P3's could house a max of 2GB or 4GB depends of what board you have. It does have a True AGP x2 3.3 Volt slot, so maybe an Avenger based card will go there since Avenger & Pentium3 were from the same time. But yes Gary did use a Quantum3D Case, why this I do not know maybe that Quantum3D was mak'n 3rd party systems as well or they were planned to do that but that never came past the Final Prototype Field tests. This is just my vision of things dunno if it true though, leave that to Gary I will my friends. |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gdonovan on 29.09.06 at 12:39:08
Woops!
Sorry guys I did make a mistake, NitroX infinity did guess correct. It is a 4xxx based system. |

I sense a greatness in The Force from your side Jedi Master Gary.
The graphics card you are useing is deffintely a 3dfx Voodoo4 4800 AGP 64MB + TV-out & DVI,inless it's a normal 4500 AGP ofcourse hehe, But I have a feeling since it's so speacial it would be a greater chance that it is the 4800 AGP. Why and how could I see that it's 4800, I will show you :) sorry for my crappy writing, but it should be clear enough on what I mean, 2 places for 32MB of ram each place devided bay 4 SDRAM chips ;) the place for the VSA-100, the DVI, the TV-Out, even the VESA connector is visable also on the same place as everyother 4500 AGP, since a 4800 has exactly the same PCB layout, it only houses the extra 32MB ram, which consist of 4 SDRAM modules, it also has the DVI and the TV-Out as extra. Your second screenshot Gary reviels a 3dfx logo in the taskmanager, rather obvious you installed 3dfx tool right to have that ;) The back of that card looks im my Jedi Master Eyes exactly looks like this one: Top View: Back of a normal 4500 AGP just to get the idea of the layout, just think in the parts of the 4800: |

Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 12.10.06 at 02:27:57
Well it's with great pleasure that I finally unveil the 'secret project' I've been working on for the last month.
So how did it come about and what is it? Read on and find out... THE INSPIRATION ============== Rewind to about one year ago and I was walking home after a shopping trip to the local supermarket. As I got about a couple of feet away from the gate to my house I found something just lying on the pavement - a 1.5 metre length of bright red acrylic (plastic). So I picked it up and stored it in my downstairs lobby... ...months passed and it gathered dust - my Mum visited from Greece and told me t throw it out...but I didn't. Something was nagging at me... "I must be able to use this for 'something'!" I thought. Then it finally dawned on me... We all use our super high powered PC's to browse the 'net and download TONS of gigabytes of data every year. But with high speed comes high costs in power - in the case of my gaming rig 450W of power. So I figured "Wouldn't it be great if I built a ultra-low power PC that uses <50W of power, but I can use it to browse the net and do all my downloads on." So I decided to use the red acrylic to build a case - and the idea was born! |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 12.10.06 at 02:28:47
THE SEARCH
=========== Everything depended on getting the right mainboard - it had not just to be small, but absolutely TEENY! I scoured eBay and eventually found an industrial mini board called the WAFER-5820. (233MHz Cyrix 'pentium class' equivalent) It was being sold by a Guy in Australia for about £40 (turns out that this was a total steal too - as buying one of these NEW for an industrial factory can cost £400 per mainboard - yikes!) I won the board along with it's metal case and it arrived a fortnight later. Other components soon followed... 256MB IBM SODIMM RAM PC133 - ironically the mainboard chipset has a 128MB limit, oh well - at least it's IBM RAM. 40 GB Maxtor 3.5" HDD (salvage) - a friend of mine had an old Maxtor with some bad sectors. The cool thing about these drives is that AFTER a low level format, all the bad sectors are gone - so I did that and they were...NICE! QSI DVD/CDRW combo drive - cheap on eBay, the eject button was broken - so I ripped the plastic front off the drive and put a new access LED and eject switch on. Works perfectly! (even if it looks rough) Floppy drive - standard fare, nothing to see - please move on! Keyboard and Laser Mouse - spare ones, had them already. Monitor - my old gaming monitor, not too great in comparison to my new one - but fine for web browsing. I had enough to assemble and test the machine...but then came the first problem... |

TEENY BOARD - EVERYTHING TEENY!
============================== After actually looking at the board I found out that all the pin headers for HDD, Floppy, Sound, USB, etc... all had mini pin headers - the same size as those found on a laptop HDD. The solution was simple - but painstaking! I had to build all of the leads that attached to the mainboad myself - by hand! The problem of the mini-pin headers was solved by going to my local Maplin (electronics) store and buying three 2.5" HDD adapter leads. Then I spliced up the leads and soldered them onto various other leads (standard HDD, Floppy, Audio, etc...) to create all of the leads I needed for the project. All the leads are insulated with heat shrink to stop short-outs (none of that - nasty shorting wires!). I also built a custom audio header to allow sound from the built in AC97 compliant chipset. So with all the leads built and checked (no crossed wires) I assembled all of the components on my dining table and installed Win XP to test it out. After a LOOOOOONG and boring wait for XP to install - it worked perfectly! (although I had some of the audio wires back to front - a quick re-solder and it was fixed!) Then comes the case... |

SAW, SAW, GRINDY, FILEY, BANG, CRASH!
================================== Building the case left absolutely no room for error. I worked out (even more amazingly) that the 1.5m piece of acrylic was 'just' enough for the whole case (I ended up with about 30cm to spare - which was mostly used to space out the drives in the case, leaving just a 10cm long 30cm wide piece remaining). I used a sideways cutting drill to slice up the acrylic - not very precice, but I've not got a dremmel (I'd like one...but just never got round to buying one...). Once the four sides were complete, I bought some plastic guttering (for covering wires on a floor) and used it to attach the four sides together withscrews and bolts and measure the two ends. The ends were soon cut and it was time to drill / cut the holes for the mainboard and drives. This was a pain in the arse - I eventually thought of putting some small screws and bolts onto the mainboard for 'legs'. Then I estimated where the holes for the mainboard ports would go and cut / drilled them out. After a bit of filing - everything eventually fit into the case! Cutting the holes for the drives was quite easy - two square holes. One for the floppy and one for the combo CDRW/DVD - short and quick! So it was in the case - but now I needed a PSU that was also teeny AND power efficient! |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by paulpsomiadis on 12.10.06 at 02:31:37
ZAP - POWER UP!
============== I thought about mini-itx computers and the PSU's they use. An external laptop type 'brick' and an internal power converter. But they were still too big! Enter the 'pico-PSU' an absolutely weeny teeny 12V to 120W DC-to-DC power converter board (the size of an ATX mainboard power connector!) PERFECT - I snagged it and a 12V laptop PSU (which only draws 36W from the mains) from eBay - and an ATX power extender lead. As the Laptop PSU only draws 36W, this achieved the <50W limit! After chopping up the extender lead to attach it to an on/off switch at the front of the case, I was set! Or so I thought... THE INCIDENT =========== So here I was mere seconds away from finishing - all I had to do was to put the poewr socket for the laptop 'brick' into the back of the case. Problem was that the hole I drilled was a little snug... "Hey, I bet I can tap this in with a hammer!" I thought... TAP, TAP, TAP... "Cool it fits!... . . .Huh? What's that?" And to my horror I'd created a big crack across the back of the case - GRR! Although it didn't affect the operation of the machine - and the case is so sturdy it holds together even WITH the crack! Ah well... |

THE FINALE
========= So yesterday I finally get my own 2Mb broadband line (no more sharing with my Uncle on his 1Mb line - wheee!) I configure my port forwarding on the router - fire up 'u-torrent' and the 'Wafer PC' is finally doing what it was intended! I've taken some pictures - but I have to finish the film and get it developed! I'll edit this last post with the links to the JPG's once I have the film developed... THAT'S ALL FOLKS! |

congrats Garym but uhm what are ya gonna use Dual 800's for, abit slow for Vista hehe
for that Voodoo4 4500 system? Or was the 4500 just to test it? Anyways it sounds like an old Dual P3 800E Coppermine setup, can't wait til the finishing toutch :) |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by gdonovan on 14.10.06 at 21:38:38
Vista? eww.
Dual boot 98SE/Win2000. The 4500 is just for testing. I still need to get the correct drives and backplate. Anyone know how much to ship a ATX backplate from Germany to the states? Should be no problem mailing in a regular number 10 business envelope. Anyone in Germany lend a brother a hand? |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 15.10.06 at 01:15:58
shouldn't be more than 4 euro's Gary really, maybe alot less , just don't let them send it via DHL, Deutsche Post is far cheaper otherwise TNT is a very good option, my Familly in Lunde % Osteradde told me this, it's near Heide , North Germany to be precise..

Hmm.. the manual states I should have no problem running 256 ECC modules but it seems to have other ideas...
Installed the second optional OS tonight, so far so good... |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 19.12.06 at 14:19:16
hmm 256MB ECC modules is quite normal for a Dual Pentium3 mobo gary, a friend of mine had a SuperMicro 370DE6 which could take 4c 512MB PC133 ECC Reg Max okay he did have a Socket 1 aka Socket 370 based mobo since yours is Slot 1 orsay S.E.C.C. 1/2 4x 256MB ECC Reg is quite normal, I think 4x 512 would be possible with a bios update ;)
My ABiT VP6 can have 4x 512MB ECC Reg as well, so ir's normal that it can take 4x 256 ECC Reg. hehe 8) |

hmm didn't know that 98SE would run on an SMP system though :-X afaik 98SE doesn't support Dual CPU or Dual Core

Of course it runs on dual-CPU, dual-core, quad-cpu or quad-core systems. No problem, it just uses one CPU/core. Nothing more, nothing less :). |

Correct- As far as the OS in concerned there is only one CPU. It simply doesn't "see" the other. For my project, Win98 was standard with a second OS available via dual boot. |
Title: Re: Workin' on something cool... Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 22.12.06 at 23:04:27
hmm thanx for that info, then I can finally think of creating and building a dual AMD AthlonMP 2200+ - 2800+ dunno what CPU is available just have to ask around for that ;)
This system will get a nice Tyan Tiger MPX mobo and as total upgrade from this AthlonXP 2700+ I am using now, it should be able to run modern things alot better too. Win98SE is very helpfull when flashing 3dfx cards which I learned from you Gary ;) I wish you all the best with your project Gary ;) |

@Gary use u-torrent. ;)
It has a teeny memory footprint and will run on just about anything! ;D Only problem... :P An error message that won't go away... ::) "Cannot save resume file, some data may be lost" Even though the error is CLEARLY a load of bollox - as it keeps on downloading anyhow! ::) |

Gary, on those old quatum drives, just letting you know, at my old work of about 3000 pc's, we had about half running on those things, most of them Win NT and were the 4 gig config's but at any rate, about half of those, roughly around 750 pc's we ended up replacing the drives on because of, and I might be wrong on what chip it is, NEC chip. I don't have one in front of me to tell. Just thought I'd let you know. If you plan on using this thing all the time, get a different drive. On some of those case, you could take the whole circuit board off of one hard drive and slap it on another drive and have it come back up but it had to be the exact same size with the exact same revision on the board. You'll notice it pops because you can actually hear it and it smells up the whole room.
Just thought I'd let you know. Looks like it's a 20 gig drive? Might not have a problem with it, most of the ones that did this were in the 4.2 to 10 gig range so just keep an image of it updated regularly. |
