Heh, too "clever" by half I am.
The card is here and works perfect.... with everything but the HDTV! I assumed that since the DVI port was doing the driving what was attached made no difference. Wrong!
The bios of the card as far as I can tell has to support an HD display. The drivers indicate the HDTV is there but when you try to activate the display you get a nice fat black screen.... and I'm not in the mood for bios hacking right now.
Works perfect with my desktop widescreen Viewsonic LCD with DVI though... so for the moment I'll leave the 6600GT in the movie box.
Poking around the NV forums it looks like (I'm not 100% positive) that the minimum supported card is a 5200. Common boards used for home media centers are the 6200 and the 6200LE. I have not found anyone yet running a HDTV with a GF4 series or less.
UPDATE- Answer found on Nvidia website FAQ!
"CEA/EIA-861B(HDTV) Timings are supported by GeForce FX, Quadro FX, and GeForce 6 series based cards with internal TMDS (Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling) via DVI out."
Heh, and it only cost me $10

Update- Think I'll just pop for a 6200 and be done with it, the 6600GT pulls 40 watts at max 2D rendering and I don't wish to stress the power supply any more than required
