Title: Other 3Dfx Hardware?
Post by nudgegoonies on 22.09.03 at 20:23:57
Does anybody knows where 3Dfx Hardware was used besides the PC/MAC-GraphicBoards we all know? For example is it true that Voodoo's where build into arcade games and if yes in wich? I've also read somewhere that VSA's where used in professional Flight-Simulators.

Regards,
Andreas

Hm, you probably already know, but Quantum did the professional Aalchemy System with VSA-100's ....

Otherwise, I'm not sure who else used them for other than Gaming purposes.

I found info's on an arcade here: http://members.fortunecity.com/pboard/sanfranrush.htm

And wasn't the Nintendo 64 Voodoo-Based? If not why do so many N64 emu's rely on Glide?  And if the N64 is Voodoo1 based then i know why there is an glide-glide Wrapper for Voodoo3 and up because Voodoo1/2 are not 100% Glide-Compatible with Voodoo3 and up (remember Carmageddon DOS only works on Voodoo1/2)

Andreas

Thanks you booth very much for the info. I can't believe how many arcades are based on Voodoo-Hardware. I'll try to find out more about those who are working under emulators. It's interesting to see that none of the arcades and also other systems based on PPC hardware are emulated. Do they have so much power or is it too hard to emulate???

By the way is the pic (can't remember the thread but it is somewhere here in this board) of the very looooooooooooong VSA based Card true?

Andreas

Might as well that it is not a fake... There can be upto 32 chained linked VSA-100, so why not all on the same board.

Because there is no Port that could ever deliver enough Power for all of these shown VSA-100's, and the Heat would literally melt the PCB to pieces ;)

...and to speak technically - where are the PCI2PCI-Bridges? The V6K already needs one while having only 4 VSA's LOL...

I also forgot :

On the Image, there is literally no circuitry seen inbetween the VSA's.

Considering just how much small IC's, resistors and layout tricks were needed merely to make a Voodoo5 run bug-free, impossible to have those VSA's work without it, so close next to each other.

Yes, you are all right. But the chance of using multiple V5-6000 in a system (6, because I never saw PC's with more than 6 PCI slots), digitally chainlinked by the drivers, and powered by a chainlinked cable that goes to the powersource, is not impossible, Unfortunatly we have no picture of someone to have succeeded that.

Still thinking: 24 VSA's in a chainlinked SLI: amazing performance, extremely well suited for Virtual Reality massive power demonstrations, with huge quality, still to be unbeatable for 10 years more, not excluded the chance of never been beaten in a "still a PC" called machine...

A V5 6000 could and probably it would be manufactured for PCI, if 3dfx was not bankrupt.

The power source for all these cards estimately needed: 200 Watts, not including your inside power source for the rest of the computer.

ya right 200 watts

one of the most dangoures things is to think this hey

i thought the same thing and purchased a flower power supply at 590 watts and blew up the v6k with it

so be carefull hey, im now running a 350 watts power supply with 3 hard disks and v6k and athlon 2400 plus cpu and it still runnig ok

should see the UPS shit it self when you plug in the pc and monitor into the UPS at the same time and when i play 8x mode fssa in motogp2 it shits itself and beeps when hammering the bike

quite a nice exmaple of the power of the v6k

ElvisAlive:

All the things about the 200W supply power for the V5-6000, the V5-6000 with 8 chips... All was pure theory and nothing else. Don't take it too seriously, these things were not are not, and will not happend ever...

Keep in mind this...
