No wonder they're getting hit almost every day...
That's a very effective way to piss off the entire population and lose every bit of respect they 'could' have earned. An unfortunate but often typical behaviour - good example how not to do it. |

Sorry Gary but I strongly disagree, I have no problems with political Jokes or Satire - I even welcome it. Well-made political Satire is usually among the best and we have an excellent culture of picking on all that deserve some - that's mostly outselfes for good reasons. (I know some Admins/Mods hate it for its potential conflicting views, but a good Forum easily supports related discussions - the sole purpose of good Satire) Avoiding political issues is among the most dangerous things a free man can do to himself, because in the end it leaves him without a voice and ultimately without a thought. |

Go ahead, but Satire is never about personal revenge or supression of free speech (which is your clear intent to prevent the nasty stitches it could create). ...nor does it care much about history - it's usually about now and today. I understand though, living in your country today and facing Satire isn't exactly easy entertainment while you might be still trying to 'hold up the flag'. Off-Topic : Funny in another way, the US Military in Bagdad just presented a supposedly Iranian Mortar shell they found in Iraq, as proof of Iranian involvement as a weapons supplier. Looking at the 'evidence', however, the professional audience sees a poorly repainted and masked (Fuse, Tail & Gasket covered) US Army M72 HE shell. I fully understand you're not fond of discussing politics in those days, but everyone has to wake up and see reality eventually. |

For the record I have no problem with satire, indeed that is the direction my humor tends to run. My clear intent is to keep the humor clean- Humor related to politics rarely is and with a biased media less so than 20 years ago. It has nothing to do with "holding up the flag" there is no shortage of elected officials I could make fun of. Two things you never discuss in public- Politics or religion, unless you are looking for an argument. |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by FalconFly on 12.02.07 at 23:00:26
If you never discuss Religion in public, you will never get to see the other Side (except what you're told about it).
If you never discuss Politics in public... guess what, you'll never see the other Side (again, except what you're told about it). IMHO that's like living in a self-created, mental Prison. I know of nothing more dangous for the own mind than doing something like that. Doing so can transform peaceful, good men into monsters (which - not knowing any better - strongly believe in their right doing) ----------- All that is more than enough material for its own Thread - likely a whole Forum. |

The are time and places for such discussions- In a public forum with members from many diverse nations looking to post "satire" as humor isn't one of them. |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by FalconFly on 12.02.07 at 23:06:53
I beg to differ...
The International character is the finest prerequisite for Satire. Who else could hold a Mirror in my face, than someone outside my own country (being spectators with the best overview and the least direct/emotional affection) ? We all need those Mirrors, otherwise we'd all just cook dinner among ourselfes and could never understand when others give us unexpected reactions for what we do. Anything else would be like... Isolation. And an odd thing occured to me : Your Avatar came into place when Denmark was under political pressure because of : A Satire... Why support it here while at the same time you try to avoid it ? No offense, but I think it's because Satire is a two-way road and you just don't like the other lane these days... |

Not at all- How do you know what is being satired is true? I do look at news sources outside the US as well as within, you don't think they are not slanted to what the publisher wants to push? I see it all the time. |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by FalconFly on 12.02.07 at 23:21:59
Because good Satire is evident by nature - it doesn't reflect distinct proof, but rather shows (in its own way) what is in the heads of a majority of people by definition.
Proof is usually delivered by the involved parties all by themselfes, whether they want it or not. Indeed the Press is reflecting certain points of view (or targets specific goals), that's why it's good to look at the big picture anyday. (and even that needs to have a common-sense and a knowledge/experience Filter applied to it) |

An assumption with perhaps no factual basis you are saying. Quote:
You are aware in a recent poll that the press in Washington DC indentified itself as 79%-82% liberal? If you have a media that identifies itself as "liberal" do you think the people reporting the news are not going to be shaping the news to thier worldview? |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 12.02.07 at 23:37:02
Gary do remind this is Europe, and what happens in WDC/ USA really has little effect on what happens over here ;)
And it may sound a little harsh but most europeans rather stick to their own lands/countires, laws, politcials rules on how they evolve and so on. So it comes from both ways and yes things may collide, jokes about the politics can be be funny in many ways. Just don't haul the old cows out of the creek, it's not worth it. I think you taking things far too serious here ::) , chill down a bit please ;) |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by FalconFly on 12.02.07 at 23:40:51
@Gary
Maybe you should read the definition of Satire first. And proof/fact... There's tons of it - literally. So much is added almost every day, it sorta jumps in your face every once a while. So much, I couldn't ignore it even if I wanted to. "liberal" ... "republic"... These words have no meaning in the free world, they only come from a mental prison created over the last decades in a highly confined region of the planet. Welcome to the century of applied Information Warfare. I choose other synonyms : "Realistic", "Critical", "Democratic" (in its original sense) ------------- I detected a similar notion in my own Country, however. It isn't as extreme, but it's slowly headed a similar way. That's one more important reason to double- and triple-check whatever News Outlet is publishing, regardless of their agenda. Can I or will I stop any of this? Certainly not... BUT, for as long as my mind is able to defeat the attempts to polarize (in whatever direction), I shall call it truly free and discuss it in public. What happens if the minds of an entire population are polarized to a specific agenda, is very well documented by history. |

"Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humour but criticism of an event, an individual or a group in a clever manner." Quote:
They have no meaning to some- But then again there are people who have no concept of the word "honor" either. Quote:
Most people are not aware of that fact, hence my support of Denmark. There is a growing cancer in the world, by the time people wake up it might be too late. |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by FalconFly on 12.02.07 at 23:54:17
Indeed, but guess what the prime target for Satire was and remains in the last ~200 years ?
And a big LOL, not being "liberal" or "republic" means knowing no "honor" ? Taking that view to its consequences makes a very foolish statement. I take it "honor" goes by highly variable definition in other places - at least that would explain alot. (I actually know that this is the case - with quite catastrophic consequences) I know of the cancer spreading, but question is : do we both mean the same ? I think that's not the case. Subjects that have been targetted by Information Warfare in all colors usually have a "Clear Target", the Target they've been overly and repeated pointed to by literally almost all Media existing. I cannot fault anyone for falling victim to that, I do fault them however, for not even taking the slightest step to actually question and research to what they've been indoctrinated upon. I know (very well) that this takes time and effort (alot!), but the begin takes the spark, the will to do so in the first place. That spark of motivation should be within all humans (I wish) : find the truth, replace believe with evidence and knowledge... ...and have the courage to take it as is comes. I'd rather go through possible pain and shock of discovery (red pill), rather than stay asleep and mindlessly wander along the masses (blue pill), but that's just me. And if the discovered reality equals the apparent reality, even the better. (but as we all know, life is a b*tch, so we know we're usually in for quite a ride - I had my ride of awakening, but I don't regret it for a split second) |

Depends where you look I would imagine. Ever read any Ayn Rand? She pegs it to some degree. Quote:
Re-read what I stated. Edit: Mind you the terms "liberal" and "republic" (which I don't think I have used) may have different meaning where you are than they do here. Quote:
Oh that spark was lit in me several years ago when I found the what I was reading and hearing was largely a facade. I find the news being reported over the radio at work amusing- Full of polls that give no information on who is being polled, where, what questions were they being asked or indeed who was paying for the poll. etc. Once you start looking, it's hard to miss... The problem is chaging your mindset to not accept "news" at face value. Sometimes the slanted news can tell you more information then real information if you know how to sift through and ask the right questions. |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 13.02.07 at 00:22:00
@ gdonoan:
It doesn't mean that people would have to agree with that, do remember that there are people with other thoughts here, which do not refere to that of yours, which did sound very liberal as republic to me as well. no offence there bud. Okay may we continue this fun topic normally? That's a big YES!! here ;D heh remember Monty Python? heh I suppose you can recall this one ;D Here a nice song about our little Galaxy :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYmeSBUPswM&mode=related&search= need to write a novel? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ow2ZZWNYNY and now let's fly to the Moon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl8JAVVJk1E |
Title: Re: Funny stuff Post by paulpsomiadis on 13.02.07 at 02:39:58
I agree with @Obi on this one... :P
This topic is supposed to be about funny stuff - agreed that 'sometimes' political satire can be, and usually is funny... ::) But can we keep this thread on topic about 'funny' things and not about definitions of what "X" means and why it leads to "Y". :-X Please open another thread if you guys want to get into discussing politics - this thread is getting WAY off topic... :P @Gary - you should have put your HDD shooting in here instead... ;) |
