Which has the best performance?
15.11.07 at 00:23:53
I was just wondering which CPU has the best performance.
I have a P3 @1000mhz 133FSB and a Duron @1300mhz 200FSB (2x100mhz)
I know the cache is bigger and faster on the P3 (I think its 256kbs or 512kbs) and the Duron has very little cache and its slower (I think its 64kbs)
For this case we'll say they are both using PC133 memory.
1. which is better for CAD
2. which is better for gaming
Thanks in advance for your input.

That's a tough question. Both of the processors are good, so I would let the mainboard decide. If you have ASUS TUSL2-C for example, then get a Tualatin (P-III). If you have some crappy board for Intel and a good one for AMD, then go for AMD and optimize it:
Lower the multiplier to 10x and increase the FSB to 133Mhz, so you get a really nice Morgan (Duron).
There is one more thing you should know: This duron is not known as a good overclocker, and it needs really good (loud) cooling. The Tualatin should be on the other side, really OC-friendly, and with a decent cooling it might hit 1.5Ghz. If so, go for Intel
CAD is allways going to be better on intel and gaming is the same on both.
Hope I helped

Tom's Hardware 2004 CPU Charts
In the dropdownlist under 'Choose benchmark' you can select loads of benchmarks. Should tell you enough about performance.

Please, don't compare the old coppermine PIII, but do take a look at Tualatin instead

Why look at the Tualatin? It's not clear whether ko3 has a Tualatin or Coppermine processor. He'd better check out first and then search for benchmarks
.
Regarding cache sizes: Be careful when comparing L2 caches sizes when you have two processors with a
totally
different architecture. Besides: The AMD Duron has 'exclusive' cache which means both L1 and L2 are 'the cache' (instead of only L2). That would mean the AMD Duron has 192KB cache. On the other hand, exclusive cache can have negative effects (but also positive
).

Thandor is right of course, and I really didn't see the second part of the question about cache. Duron has indeed small cache, but it's on-die and it's *very* fast. Might be even faster then the one from intel.
Size of the cache doesn't mean that much for the applications of that time, but the speed does. And check if that PIII is copermine or Tualatin

Thanks NitroX infinity -Tom's Hardware 2004 CPU Charts were helpful and gave some good ideas of how they compare
Thanks elfuego and Thandor
I will find out which P3 I have this weekend, but what is the big difference between Tualatin or Coppermine?
I will not be O.C.ing because of poor heatsink cooling on both CPUs
The Duron is in a ASUS A7V133 w/on board raid
The P3 is in some VIA MB -which I still have to check out
Thanks again!

The P3 is a Coppermine and its in a GIGABYTE GA-6VTXE.
What is the big difference between a Tualatin and a Coppermine?
Thanks again

Tualatin is produced on .13 micron if I'm not mistaking, Coppermine is .18 micron. Tualatin seems to slightly outperform Coppermine.
