Title: Dual graphics cards is possible
Post by sandbagger on 05.04.04 at 20:34:15
Hi all,
I've just joined this forum as I've got a problem you may be able to help me out with.

However, before that, I've seen a previous post here that cast some doubt on the installation of 2 primary graphics cards in the one PC?

I've just carried this out in order to fly the flight sim Red Baron 3D (with Full Canvas Jacket patch).

It is possible to configure one PC with dual hardware profiles that enable the user two switch between cards (in my case a GeForce AGP and a Voodoo 5 500 PCI).

I run a rig with WIN98 OS and either card works just fine.

I suspect others here know this can be achieved but just in case I can pass on what I've learnt to those who may wish to give it a go.

Now, my problem!!

Although my PC will operate other sims with either card, Red Baron (with the FCJ patch) crashes on game start.  Its been suggested that the Voodoo drivers may be the problem.  The set installed are the original that came with the card (Version 1.3) and were intended for Direct X 7.

I have Direct X 9 installed so wondered whether the card drivers were possibly at fault or if 3DFX is not supported with Direct X 9 and that's the real problem.

Direct X9 snag or update the drivers.  If drivers, which would be the best?

Anyone of you 3DFX Guru's have an idea?

Thanks and Cheers for now,

well, won't be a problem installing both graphics cards, a voodoo5 pci is still the best go for a secondary one! but anyway, check it out yourself, it's not the same thing w/ all configs..
no, there aren't any dx9 drivers for your voodoo. the best development so far is the amigamerlin driver, download it from this archive. still the dx7 core, but many bugfixes  ;)

Hi sandbagger.

I run RB3D FCJ on Windows 98 here but I use Voodoo2s.  I can't see why you would be worrying about the version of DirectX since the game runs so much better in glide.  ???

I suggest you search the FCJ forum for your solution and, if you don't find it there, then post a question.  Go here-

Good luck.  It's a great game and FCJ has really given it a boost.  I get shot down a lot.  But, as I fall earthwards, at least I can admire the amazing graphics now!  ;D

Hi,
Thanks for the heads up regarding Direct X.  I thought that Direct X had an effect on any graphics drivers including 3DFX.  If I understand you correctly, my installation of DirectX 9 should have no effect on the type of 3DFX drivers I have installed as I'm running in Glide mode only.

If that is the case then I guess I'm looking to update the card drivers (Voodoo 5 500 PCI) to a later spec.

Do you know of the best available for WIN 98 OS?

Cheers for now,
