Title: Voodoo1/Voodoo2 soldering larger memory chips?
Post by ps47 on 10.09.16 at 16:04:19
so, assuming one gets his hands onto a pack of 1MB EDO memory chips and a soldering iron, how far can things be taken? how much memory can be crammed onto a V1, and a V2? as mentioned in the marketplace topic, a 8MB V1 should be pretty easy to do, just getting rid of the old 0.5MB chips and resoldering the new 1MB ones. but what about a V2? would the card be able to utilize 24MB of memory? I'm vaguely remembering that the FBI limit is 4MB, so that would mean 800*600 would still be the max resolution for a single card. so that would mean 10MB texture memory for each TMU? sounds.. unhealthy.

I did, but it doesn't look like anyone attempted soldering 1MB chips on a V1 (to get 8MB on a regular 4MB card) or a V2 (to get 24MB or whatever the max is). just piggybacking more 0.5MB modules on a V1 (apparently works), and adding extra 4MB to 8MB V2s to make them into regular 12MB cards (also works, just a matter of adding the chips into all empty positions).

also aware of all the vsa-100 memory mods.

no diff, piggyback mem chips or solder double density, all is same

as for v2, there is no documentation on bruce and chuck chips. so no lucky attempt, afaik
