Monitor to use for old low res games...
24.06.11 at 15:56:01
I thought I'd post this since I really haven't seen to much on it but I'm using a 24' monitor using a HDMI cable to my main box and a standard VGA hooked up to a KVM switch for working on other machines.
If I pull my old box out of the closet and fire it up, I'm guessing that some of the games that are stuck at 600x400 are going to look choppy as hell (or very very large). Are you guys just using old 15/17' CRT monitors for your retro rigs then? Or maybe just running everything in Windowed mode?
I was going to dig it out last week and decided against it since it's kind of a pain to hook everything up just to find out that I should be using different equipment anyway.

Most new videocard drivers allow you to set how lower resolutions are displayed on your monitor. For ATi it's called GPU scaling. You can select between stretching the image to fill the entire screen, stretching it but maintaining the aspect ratio and only use the amount of pixels in the resolution.

Thanks for the reply NitroX. Sorry, I should have mentioned that my old box has a V3 in it and I wanted to go back and play some old games with it but I was going to run it through the KVM switch if possible for space reasons. It's why I was asking about the monitor and what might be best - I just didn't explain it well enough.

I use a KVM for my V1, V5 and laptop to connect to a 24" LCD. Yeah, sometimes old games look blocky... try porting out to a 50" plasma TV.... hehe

Plasmas are very good for old analog resolutions, but a big old 4:3 CRT monitor would be better in this case.
There are some professional CRT monitors from IBM (or similar company) that have also Digital input (DVI plug).
I am in the same conditions as jardansun8
