I think the SG-RAM (at best) offered better timings, and might be a better Overclocker for those interested.
But performance-wise, I've never heard of it being a real advantage at their stock speeds.
I have no Idea why they used SG-RAM, but the latest V3 Board's PCB layouts look very clean and orderly compared to the earlier SD-RAM layouts. I can only speculate that they could build it at lower cost (after all, other Cards became a serious competition versus the Voodoo3 series, with the V4 and V5 being delayed.)
Maybe it was a way of allowing 3dfx to continue making them profitable ?

Had better timing but was less tolerent of being operated outside rated spec. Overclocking with SGRAM usally is problematic. Testing I have done shows most of the time you can overclock only a few mhz over the rams rated spec. (at least on the two cards I was testing)
SDRAM on the other hand if you got a good batch would go way over it's rated spec- I have a V-2000 here with 6ms ram and it will clock to 195 mhz.
Cost was one reason for the SGRAM, the other reason was to do with the memory interface to the V3 and 8 meg cards.
