Colin MacRae Rally 2.0 help...
18.02.08 at 23:19:04

I recently reinstalled Colin MacRae Rally 2.0  It worked fine the last time I had it installed but I think I had my onboard video operational then, now I am using my Voodoo3 2000 PCI @ 16megs video ram.  The menus run great but in a race the game freezes maybe 10 to 20 seconds in and locks up the whole computer and I have to shut it off and reboot.  I have heard elsewhere that it has issues with Voodoo cards.is that true?  Is there a fix and/or a patch and/or anything that can help me out.

My specs are:

Celeron 533mhz
128 meg pc 125 SDRAM
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI @16 mb
I am running the Voodoo3 1.07.00b driver;  I believe it is the one that is modded from the last official driver.  I got it here from the archive.....I am running Windows 98se if that helps.

For windows 98SE, i've always had pretty good luck with the Amigamerlin driver set. You can download by clicking below and give them a shot. The drivers were release in 02' but seem to be pretty stable for most games.

Download

Other wise I'm not sure as I've never played the game. Hope it helps some.

note that you are downgrading from dx8 driver to dx7 driver, but maybe thats exactly what the game needs..

Oh, I didn't realize that, thx.  I tried it though iand it didn't work.....I am gonna try it next with the 3dfx tools,  global settings under VIA chipset set to compatibility instead of performance and with the with Geometry Assist set to emulate T&L.  Maybe it'll work, maybe not.  thx for the ideas though.

I had a thought the other day.  How come no one has come up with a way to use HD space like in Virtual Memory but as Video Ram?  Like a way to partially extend your cards ram amount.....

Would be unbelievably slow.
AGP texturing was the first way of extending the VRAM amount, but even the MUCH faster RAM (compared to the HDD) is much slower than the VRAM, so that wouldn't be a smart way of extending VRAM Wink

I have yet another side question: I switched back to the 1.07.00beta driver, and I use the 3dfx tools from the 1.07.00 driver package.  I really liked the tools that came with the Amigamerlin 2.9 driver.  Can I install them to use with the 1.07.00beta driver or are they specially made to fit with the Amigamerlin driver set?  Are there newer/better 3dfx tools that will work with the 1.07.00beta driver?  Maybe it'll help the game run.

I finally found the game readme file, it got installed to the hd when the game was installed.  The only issue it says it has with a Voodoo3 is with flashing lights on tracks......so far I haven't noticed any so I wonder why it is doing this crashy thing?

they should be compatible.install the 1.07.00b driver on top of the amigamerlin driver, that should give you all the extra options in 3dfx tools+dx8 compatibility.

as for MacRae Rally,no idea,it could be milion of things..old install of win,bad chipset drivers, conflicting settings, even corupted game files.

Well I don't think it is data corruption on my hd's, I tried on one at minimus install due to a lack of space and it froze in race, and on a less full hd (full install of the game) it still froze up all the same.  As for Windows I recently reistalled it over itself to fix a boot up problem, so I don't think it is a Win98 problem but I won't count anything out.  There was an error of corrupted/conficting data between the setup cab file and the rest of the cd for some files the first time i installed it recently (4 days ago thereabouts) but every install since that (I have uninstalled it andd reinstalled it about 5 times since that) with nary a error or anything.

As for the drivers, I did reinstall the 10700beta one over the amigamerlin and the tools reverted to the ones fropm the 10700 set.  I am gonna retry doing that tonight.

I also saw the latest Mikepedo driver.  Maybe it'll be ok.  Is it dx7.x or dx8.x compliant?

You might want to check and see whether you have the U.S. release or the European release of CMR 2.0 as well.  There is a Version 1.09 update for the European release (cmr2Patch109.zip), and it is available in a number of places.
