Quite unbelievable, definitely a very high-risk move from AMD.
Let's hope they do the right thing and keep ATI the way they are in the GFX business, and only make good use of the Chipset division.

I think the move is God Like AMD and ATi always have been good setups AMD could use a little good tech for chipset support Wink the ATi RD580 with CrossFire Express 3200 is very rocksolid though some of those chipsets had a SB450 South Bridge chip which indeed have some symptoms but that was fixed with ULi M1575, norries I have M1575 also and really never had probs withit what so ever, with ATi in the field AMD can keep thier minds on the CPU's and togeather with ATi the Chipsets and other integrated gear and ATi will do the GPU's that way Intel and nVidia might have something big to face against especially next year.

that the Alliance of AMD and ATi have fused is a very good thing I have a good feeling about this one.

I don't know if I like this or not. I'm a huge fan of both, have never had a Intel chip and have never had a Nvidia card (I've still got the original 64 meg Radeon card that came out after 3dfx went under). But having these two together? I don't see the benifits from this.

When Dell bought out Alienware, there was benifits to both sides that were very clear. Alienware was able to use Dells deep manufactoring and distribution services and Dell was able to acquire the use of AMD based systems (which they are starting to offer this fall) with out really breaking any contracts that they had with Intel. There were benifits to that merger/buyout. This though? Both already have major distrubution systems in place. Both were already having major communications with each other to make sure the currently line of ATI products would do the best for AMD that it could and now with this, ATI lost the Intel license and because of the Apple's using Intel now, ATI lost the Apple account as well, so where is the real benifit to this? The only thing that makes any posiable sence is financial and has far as I know, neither company was at the verge of going bankrupt.  As much as I love both companies, I'm honestly kind of worried about this move.

norries AMD will keep thier minds on CPU's and Chipsets ATi will keep thier minds on VPU's and Chipsets as well, this way the chipsets for both CPU and VPU's will become a more structual design which is the base of any PC.

If you hjave a good base design then you are sure that the other parts will work very good as well, Ati needs AMD for better South Bridge chipset design and AMD needs ATi for the Best VPU sollutiions this is, I have a an AMD /ATi set as well and really it's very stable and vet solid, the RD580 needs no driver to opperate, only it's 2 Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet controlers, onboard AC97 8.1 channel soundcard and it's SATA 150 & SATAII 300 controllers, but the main chipset relies on no driver what so ever, and with AMD's support they can only design better things togeather mix ideas and creat a super structure.

Ati also used ULi for thier South Bridge chips but still the there were leaks with stabillity problems the ULi M1575 is a far better design than the ATi SB450 true there but I think that the ULi design still has some flaws, that way but gett'n AMD in the field those flaws will be cleared in future designs.

Ati is still king of the world with Single VPU based boards, nVidia needs a Dual GPU setup just to catch up with a Single ATi X1900 XT/XTX or the later X1950 XTX setup! So AMD did a very smart move and they can only take advantage with ATi by tak'n on Intel's so called Conroe.
