My 3dfx Gaming Rig
20.11.07 at 17:59:53

A few months ago I decided to build a new old computer.  By that I mean it would have a few new parts and look new, but have the guts of a system that would be awesome a decade ago... Just thought I would share the out come of my wild hair Smiley

Specs-
ASUS P3V4X / Slot1
Pentium III 866Mhz
4x256 PC133 RAM = 1GB
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
SoundBlaster Live!
20GB & 40GB Harddrives
400w Ultra-X Connect PSU
OS - Dual boot 98SE and 2kPro

Badges-
...

Internals-
...

External-
...

It's 3dfx glow.
...

My pride and joy.
...

My next project- A Voodoo2 SLI Rig.  Here are my beautys-Bought them brand new sealed in antistatic bags... Smiley
...

Or I could use my other set Smiley
...

I also purchased 5 of these mousepads, using one right now!
...

Nothing extremely special, but I thought someone might find this kind of neat.

I really like what you've built there. Grin

Where the hell did you manage to get 1Gb PC133 RAM from by the way? I've just built my own equivalent of your rig but could only muster 512Mb PC133. To compound matters, I'm using a Slot A Athlon on an old Irongate chipset so it hated any of the newer DIMMS I threw at it Sad

Oh, be sure to get the unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack which you can get here; http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html.

Oh and this could be worth looking at as well; http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=80800

Sorry if I'm teaching a Granny to suck eggs but just in case I'm not, have a gander. Smiley

As a matter of interest, my rig;

AMD Athlon Slot A 'Thunderbird' 900MHz
512Mb PC100 SDRAM
64Mb Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
Sound Blaster Live Value
40Gb 7200rpm Seagate
16x DVD-ROM
16x CDRW
Windows 98 SE

Not quite the same, but just as much fun.

I actually am using 4x256 PC133 in the rig.  I have another spare 4x256 PC133 waiting for my Voodoo2 SLI rig.  I got the RAM cheap and it works so oh well Smiley

achaycock - Thank you for the kind words and the links, I was unaware that there was "auto-patcher" for 98se, I will have to check that out.  Your rig sounds awesome aswell, its a great feeling to have something like we do.

paulpsomiadis - Thanks for the warm welcome!

I will hopefully be posting my Voodoo2 SLI rig soon, it will have the specs below.

ASUS P3BF / Slot1
Pentium III 1Ghz
4x256 PC133 RAM = 1GB
2x Diamond Monster II Voodoo 2's in SLI
SoundBlaster Live Value
40GB Harddrive
Generic 350w PSU

Best of luck to all with your future endeavors and God bless.

Well let me just say you lucky sod. Your V5 rig looks like a real flier.

I've actually been spending the day building my other 3DFX rigs and i hope to be posting piccies in the not too distant future. So far I have;

AMD K6-III @ 400MHz
256Mb PC100 SDRAM
32Mb TNT2 Ultra
8Mb Obsidian SB50-4220
SoundBlaster AWE64
20Gb HDD 98SE SP1

AMD K6-III @ 500MHz
256Mb PC100 SDRAM
32Mb Geforce DDR
2x 8Mb Voodoo 2 SLI
Audio Excel AV511
40Gb HDD 98SE

and of course my 900MHz V5 rig I listed above. The V2's are of interest as I have fitted them with a set of V2 Stealth coolers, and cool is the operative word. The work and look amazing. I will be posting pictures.

I'm thinking of swapping out the Obsidian for a good old fashioned Voodoo 1 and building a P2/3 rig in either a Quantum 3D look-a-like case or a customised tower specially made for the purpose. For now though, the K6 makes a good home. These systems naturally have pride of place in my home Smiley

While I'm thinking about it, I really would be sure to use the unofficial 98SE service pack on those puppies, as it fixes the memory issue with systems that have 512Mb of RAM or more. Naturally that 1Gb of RAM will be more use in W2K, but you don't want out of memory messages in 98, especially with a beast like that.

I must admit, those PIII's will really get the best out of your Voodoo's. You'll have to post some benches.

Those V2 Stealth coolers would be kick butt to have.  I'm sure you will be very happy with their cooling performance.  Can't wait to see pictures of your rigs and what not Smiley

I will run some benchmarks in the near future... and I will post the results once I have completed the tests Smiley  What benchmarking software(s) should I use? 3DMark 99 or 2k? Aquamark? Game benchmarks? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Seeing that you have a TNT2 Ultra, that reminds me that awhile back I gave mine to my friend to use in his beater computer.  That was the card I used with my Voodoo2's in my first comptuer.  I will be getting that back from him tomorrow!

Both 3DMarks would be interesting, Unreal and Quake III were the standard bearers of the day for gaming performance and both of course can use Glide. Aquamark if you have it would be interesting as well.

My boxes are a boring beige, unlike your own, but yeah, I will be posting some piccies, especially of the V2 Stealth cooler. I'll also be benching these rigs, so it will be interesting to see how close they can get to your own, though of course it'll only be the Athlon that can even come close in performance to those PIII puppies that you have Cheesy

Alright, I installed a few benchmarking applications and gave it a go.  I decided to use 3dmark 99 Max and 3dmark 2000 Pro. (both of which you can acquire by pming me)  I might do some game benchies in the future, ie: Q3A and Unreal(s).  These tests were done on the following system at stock speeds twice and then averaged.  Also note they were run at 1280x1024 @ 32 bit color.

Specs-
ASUS P3V4X / Slot1
Pentium III 866Mhz
4x256 PC133 RAM = 1GB
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
SoundBlaster Auidgy 2 ZS
20GB & 40GB Harddrives
400w Ultra-X Connect PSU
OS - 98SE

Not sure what to compare these scores to, so if any of you want to run them and compare just let me know.

...
3dmark 99 Max Pro

...
3dmark 2000 Pro

...
All I can say is, it sure was fun to watch the old system tear these benchies apart.

So that's my little rant.  Maybe next I will try Win2kPro or some other benchmarks.

rotten out

ps- for those who are tuning into my thread, you get a special treat, a wallpaper that I found somewhere and slapped a 3dfx logo on it.  3dfx/Motion Blur, it just fits hand in hand.

You do know this would have been still more impressive of you could have delivered the actual model. I'm just saying, seeing as you were able to give the wallpaper Grin

Now here's the question. Faced with a choice between the 3dfx babe, or a voodoo 5 6000, what would you choose? I didn't pit this between her and a Rampage as Iwanted to give her a chance Cheesy

@rottentreats - guess you had to remove the link to the wallpaper since it was PR0N.

Shame, a rather foxy model too...

==edit==

link works now...
