Voodoo 5 6000 prices
22.11.09 at 22:42:39

Hi all,

I was wondering what are the prices on the V5 6000 now, a year ago there were quite a few of such boards for sale, ranging from under 1000 euro to 2500 euro...

Now, I can't see any V5 6000 for sale, I was wondering what is a fair place for such a board - 3700 especially, since they are common to find, but other revisions too. Also, how much is a damaged board ? I know that Hank tries to fix any V5 6000, but if a board is too damaged and cannot be fixed...how much is worth for display purposes ?

To be honest, I think that right price for 3700 board is 1000 euros...or at least not less than 800 euros if you are lucky. If you put that board on ebay, it should go for less or much more, it depends by interested people, but there are too many factors in such situations that influence final price, so you cannot extimate correct value this way.

Early revisions could took higher prices, doubled or more...

From what I remeber by Amigamerlin and other v56k owners, a damaged Voodoo5 6000 for display purpose, worth no more than 100 euros...

Hmm, that's interesting news, I'd like a damaged V5 6000 for 100 euro, last time I remember that a defective V5 6000 has been sold for ~ 700 euro.

800 euro for a good card would also be a good deal, unfortunately too much for me, but a good price for other peoples.

In the last couple years I noticed the cheapest I've seen a v5 6000 go for was 500.00 US on Craigslist.  Next was for 800 Pounds on Ebay (SFFT).  These were functional cards.

I remember Chosen One won a non-functional one for around 600 Euros.

I paid 2000 Euros for mine on ebay and I know of others who paid or charged 2500 US.  All of the cards mentioned were Rev. A 3700 cards.

Yes, I remeber that. As I said, I have an opinion on the correct price of such item and I do not think that is so distant from reality. However it does not mean these items could not be extimate more than common. Personally, we can say they are price-less! So, indipendently from prices, if we are available to spend money on this passion and we are happy with cards we buy (from common Voodoo3 to uncommon prototypes) than it is ok. Wink

Happy collecting, guys!

I would have a hard time justifying EUR 1000, let alone close to EUR 2000. I think it's way over the top.

that's the reason I will never own a Voodoo5 6000.

I love the card, but I will NEVER EVER pay THAT much for a videocard, unless it is a Rampage. Smiley
And if you are lucky enough to find someone that actually wants to sell his Rampage, you ain't getting it for 1000 bucks. Smiley

Well, I guess that V5 6000 is obeying the general rule - supply and demand, if there are enough people willing to pay a requested price - that price will stay or even increase - until sellers cannot find buyers -then the price will go down - only until buyers are found. That bring out another question : how many V5 6000 are out there ? And maybe another question, a little difficult to answer : home many 3dfx collectors exist ? We know a few from the forums and comunities, but I bet there are a lot of others collectors that prefer to stay annonymous.

It's interesting to think about what the price of a V5 6000 card will be in the future.  Unless you have an AGP2PCI adapter, you're using older hardware.  Even PCI's days are numbered with PCI Express taking over every slot format.

But on the other hand it's a low production prototype card. There is also an allure to the card as well.  A definite Hall of Fame card for being the first 4x GPU video card.  It's also the most powerful Voodoo card produced.

Also, not all 3700 cards are equal either.  Some have Engineering Tags, some have PCI rework, some have power hookups soldered to the board and others have their blank end part cut off by hand.  These affect the price too.  Wink

As per the Dodge Garage:http://www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/index.htm
"Intel Revision - Trivia- Only one batch of Intel boards were made, "promo mainly," maybe 100+ was the estimate.."
"Revision 2 - 2700 - Trivia- The number of these boards made is unknown at this time, but there is a notable number in circulation."
"Revision 3 - 3400 - Trivia- Several hundred of these boards are known to have been made, but noted to have flaws."
"Revision 4 - 3600/3700 - Trivia- Several hundred known to have been made and considered the best of all the revisions."
"Revision 5 - 3900 - Trivia- A former employee of 3dfx indicates that typically when a batch of engineering samples were done that usually 10 were run off but never more then 20. So chances are that 10-20 of this revision were made back in October of 2000, but as to how many remain is still a mystery."

To be fair, it's only that expensive because it has cult status. It's a pretty bad videocard in most respects. Impressive engineering from a PCB point of view, but if you need 4 graphic chips (not four GPU's mind) to beat the opposition your doing something very wrong. But I think we all know that by now.
(It also wasn't the first 4 chip card btw)

Now Rampage is a whole different story.

Like RaverX said, it's just supply and demand. People (including me, do not get me wrong from what I wrote above) really badly want one, because it's just such a landmark in 3D history, and an even bigger part of 3dfx.

To think I could have owned at least 7 6000's if I had enough money makes me a little sick lol. Being married now, there is an even smaller chance now.

Honey, I'm home!! I just picked up my $2000 videocard. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????? Grin

I suppose I will put my two cents in.

Long story short, there are not a lot of V6K's available. (as most are in collectors hands) When the opportunity arises to acquire one, it can sometimes be a once in a lifetime chance.  Money is just money, it will always be there, and come and go.  I don't forsee a fully functional V6K's going for less than €1,750 or $2,500, with Voodoo Volts, even more.

I could not be happier with the V6K I purchased, even though I only use it around 3-4 times every 6 months.  Sometimes I think that people that have not/do not own a V6K understand the feeling you have when playing a game with such a beast... it is definitely different than any other gaming experience I have experienced.

It is truely, a dream come true.

I disagree with that. Of course money is money, but money can buy almost anything (products, not health, love...but anyway...). Now, money come and go, but they are ALWAYS in limited ammounts for us, the regular mortals. When you have so much choices and so less money - it's very difficult to spend them. With 2000 USD you can buy a very powerful gaming computer and enjoy the latest games for at least one year. Of course that you could buy a V5 6000 and enjoy old glide games at the max, but you can do almost the same thing with a much much more cheapre V5 5500.

As for the feeling - yeah, I bet there's a very nice feeling in having a V5 6000 and using it, but it all depends on how much money you have. What do you think that is the feeling of a Ferrari F50 owner ? and driving that beast...but how many people really afford that ?

I can only dream of a V5 6000, even spending 100 euro (a very low amount of money) for a bad V5 6000 would be a tough choice, I would go for it, but...damn...sometime I wish I had a lot of money, they say money don't buy hapiness, sometime it's true, but a lot of times it so NOT true  Embarrassed

Move back in with your parents for a month or two, then go buy it.  Grin

Nah, not an option really. Let's face it, if we have got a family to support, and are having a tight budget, there is just no way anyone can justify spending that much. You can actually build a tremendous new system for almost half of that.

But alas, nothing much is going to change the price really. Some still live with parents, some are bachelors still, and it's a bit easier when you do not have to care about anyone but yourself.

I've got one card in my collection which is the only one outside the company, if I would put that up for 2k, I don't think anyone would buy that lol.

It's not really about what a product is worth in real life, it's what people want to spend on it. The first v56k went for peanuts on eBay. Shame I wasn't collecting back then really.
