V2 SLI Glide only for XP & 98se
01.05.03 at 02:37:52

Looking to get some glide support for my older games.
My system is a p4@2700 with a radeon 9700pro.

I have a pair of v2 - 12mb cards, the sli cable, and some empty pci slots on my mobo.

I have a winXP and Win98se gaming partitions.  I only want glide under XP and 98se, as my r9700pro will handle all my d3d and ogl.
From searching all over the place, I found a mirad of drivers, and am a bit confused as to which ones will work.

For XP, is "anthony's basic glide/ogl" drivers the way to go?  I have seen others, but they say they are for Athon and I have a P4.  I only want glide, so is there a way to turn off the V2's ogl??

For 98se, I was going to use the latest reference drivers, but once again all I want is glide from the v2, and not d3d nor ogl.  Can you not install those sections?

Thanks!!

Well, it is possible to remove the OpenGL entry from the Registry, which should make all Applications only use the primary adapter (which is default anyway).

Glide would only be used by the Voodoo2, as they are the only cards to which the Glide calls are directed.

Direct3D is a bit more difficult, but still, all Games should default to the primary adapter.

For Win9x, the V3.02.02 Driver will do nicely, and Anthony's Driver should indeed give Glide under WinXP.

Follow FalconFly's recommendations for the drivers.

The Voodoo2s will only run OpenGL under specific circumstances.  OpenGL games and programs look for a file called opengl32.dll in your Windows\System (or System32 for XP) folder.  If this is used it will be the one that runs the game on your primary card and not the Voodoo2.

By default a game or program will always search its own directory for a dll before using the ones in Windows\System.  Therefore, because the Voodoo2's implementation of OpenGL was a partial one, 3Dfx used this to enable OpenGL in specific circumstances.  This prevented the Voodoo2 from crippling the OpenGL capabilities of the primary card by overwriting the Windows\System file.  If a game (Quake for example) is to run on a Voodoo2 then there would be a file called opengl32.dll in the Quake folder.  This would be the Voodoo2 version.  To get Quake to run on your primary card you'd simply delete this version and then the game would use the one in Windows\System.

Some games let you select this by menu (Quake 2 for example).  Generally the versions of opengl32.dll that the Voodoo2 uses are called "minigls".  It is generally thought that Metabyte's WickedGL was the best (most highly developed with the best image quality) although 3dfx's own are faster.

Thanks!
I will go with the stock 3dfx drivers for win98se, and try the Anthony drivers for XP.  Do the Anthony XP drivers support SLI?

Some people claim to have problems with SLI on Windows 2000 or XP.  I can't comment on Anthony's drivers since I've got a Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI card installed and it only works with Quantum3D's own drivers under XP due to memory timing issues.  But most people get glide SLI working fine with Anthony's drivers under XP.
