Microsoft Train Simulator keeps crashing
17.02.05 at 01:41:42

As anyone had any problems with Microsoft Train Simulator?

I can run it for 10 to 15 minutes then it just stops and I get the Microsoft message send this error report to Microsoft.

Microsoft Train Simulator
Application Failure train.exe 1.16.5.912 in train.exe 1.16.5.912 at offset 000b62a3
Microsoft Train Simulator
Application Failure train.exe 1.16.5.912 in unknown 0.0.0.0 at offset 01bffc95

etc

I'm using a Voodoo3 2000 PCI, Win98se. I've downloaded and installed voodoo3-10700 drivers, no difference. I've downloaded AmigaMerlin-win9x-29 and that makes no difference either.

I've downloaded and installed the updates from Microsoft but this make no difference.

I've emailed Microsoft and they say:

This error message usually indicates your video driver is incompatible with DirectX 7.0 or later, or your computer video card is using outdated drivers, or your video card does not meet the minimum memory requirements.

DirectX 7.0 is installed as standard, I'm using 8.1 now.

I did a search on Microsoft Knowledge base.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303496

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301185

I've done an uninstall and re-install but it still crashes.

Yes I've tried that web page. It only talks about using troubleshooter which I've used. There is no problem when the game runs, all the effects, graphics all work great. I've even cut out all the effects in the options, and it still crashes.

Unfortunately most of the Microsoft Sims I've played require Highend DirectX video cards.
The only spec shown for the game is:

Video card: 8MB/3D

Which should cover most cards.

Thanks guys.

Hum, how do you setup the 3dfx tools ?

edit : what's your machine ?

Because it still crashes with Amigamerlin 2.9 installed I uninstall the tools.

I've added my comp spec to my signature.

I had another email from Microsoft. Although you have the latest drivers for your graphics card installed they are very old. I have checked the 3dfx website and noticed that your graphics card is not longer supported by the manufacturer. In the meantime from the DxDiag file you sent I noticed some problems with DirectX.
Telling me to download DirectX 8.1, which is already installed and do a safe mode install. There were no problems in the DxDiag.txt file, only there's no input device (joystick).

I tried all options in the Troubleshooter today and that made no difference.

Since you can start and run the game without problem during some time

I noticed yesterday that it crash once while starting up.

For Patience's sake, this is what the game's readme file says about video cards:

VIDEO DISPLAYS AND VIDEO DRIVERS
Install latest drivers
In many cases you'll get better video performance if you install the latest drivers from your video card manufacturer. A list of these sites is available at the Microsoft Train Simulator Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim/info/
Finding out what video card your computer has
You can find out the manufacturer of your video card by following these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System.
3. In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab and navigate to the section that describes your video card.
This section lists the type of video card that you have installed in your computer.
Setting color depth for maximum performance
For best performance, use the high color (16-bit) setting for your video resolution. Displaying more colors affects performance.
Optimizing your font settings
It is recommended that you set your system’s display settings to Small Fonts to maximize viewable space in Train Simulator dialog boxes. Also, users of the Windows® 95 Plus! Pack or Windows 98 who have selected Smooth edges of screen fonts in their Windows Display settings will display smoothed fonts. If you don't have the Plus! Pack, you can download the font smoother from: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/grayscal/smoother.htm
If you have less than 64MB of RAM and an 8 or 16MB video card
If you have a computer with 64MB of RAM or less, and are using video cards with 16MB or less, do not turn up the World Objects Texture Quality setting (in the Options screen) past 2, or the game may freeze up.
Supported video resolutions
The following resolutions are supported by most video cards and are available for selection (if supported):
640 x 480, 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 1024
All resolutions provided by the video card at 640 x 480 and above are supported, in 16- and 32-bit color depths.
Resolutions of 640 x 480 and below, or color depths other than 16- or 32-bit, are not supported.

Hum, i'm thinking or you have a problem of hardware or a problem with the install. of the game.
Do you know if a demo exists ? i see nothing.
If yes, i own a machine which can run under Win98SE with a K6/3+ 450.

I've done a full scandisk and the drive shows no errors. I did a search for a demo but I can't find any.

All the trains crash. It will crash sometimes when its loading the main screens.

Someone suggested I rebuild Windows because of some conflict somewhere. I put a bigger Hard drive in last week. I installed the standard voodoo drivers. I installed the sound card drivers. I installed DirectX 8.1. I installed Trainsim and ran it for 40 minutes without any crashes. It normally crashes in the first 10 - 15 minutes. I thought great, no crashes its working.

So I carried on installing all my other software and ran it again later that night. And guess what, it crashed within 10 minutes again.  Embarrassed

What trian are you using when it crashes?

Is it the same trian? will it crash quicker on certian trains?

*edit* Also i just thought i would ask, Is it when the trians are going in a certain direction? How many passengers and were are the trians heading?

It sounds like something you installed later has created a conflict.

Try unistalling all your "other software" one @ a time and test Trainsim after each uninstall.

I did a search for some Omega drivers because when I used to run Colin McRae 2 that used to crash. I can't find the original drivers because the link in down. But I found V3-4-5 Omega Drivers v1.03 W9x-ME.

http://www.guide3d.ru/omega/3dfx.shtml

I installed those and ran it for the full journey 50 minutes without a crash. I tried to do another journey and that crashed just after starting off. I selected another journey and that ran the total distance, 30 minutes.

So I still think its a matter of getting some compatible drivers.  Wink
