Unusual WinXP problem

Ookay - I figure that someone else may have had this problem before, so here goes...
If I right click on the 'Start button and click 'Open' or 'Explore' this works as expected.
However...
If I right click on one of the folders IN the Start menu and do any of the following...
Open
Open all users
Explore
Explore all users
...all I get is an hourglass for one second...but no Explorer window? ???
Anyone got any ideas what this vould be and how to fix it? ???
A.V. and Spyware scan both come up clean...
(Norton 2005 and Spybot)
Windows Update is up to date...

hmm seems that your windows is kinda messed up maybe a new install should fix some things up, I'd say go for Win2KPro + SP4 I use that for eons never have probs with it. Used to use XP but XP is way too unstable and now I use 2K Pro + SP4 no more wierd and funny things happen all is smooth.

Thanks - but I have WAAAAAAY too many programs to re-install...
...plus the problem is minor.
It's not like it really hampers me from doing stuff - it's just annoying!

Could try a restore point. Other thing to try is create a new user and see if it works under that login name, that way you can figure out if it's a system problem or profile problem. If it's a profile problem, should be easy enough to fix but system wide might be a little harder to fix.

Hmm...I tried a new user profile, but it still doesn't work - looks like the problem is system wide!

that sucks. I'll look around some of the other forums I check out and see if anyone has an idea on how to fix it. I've never ran into that before.
