Is this a joke? 3dfx was founded in 1994, how can you put in the poll older dates?

I believe that the first "fans" appeared in 96 when the Voodoo Graphics was launched. But the real fans appeared much latter, after 3dfx was gone, I assume that this happened in 2003-2004, then the collector's began to show interest in 3dfx cards and the value of 3dfx cards started to rise.

The poll refers simply to the age of the people that grew up with 3dfx and not when they were born as "3dfx fans" Wink

In 1996-97 they could be 14 years old (class 1982-83), like 24 years old (class 1972-73), like older (1969 or earlier)...

Ah, I see now. Then they couldn't be born before 1986 or else they would be less than 10 years old when Voodoo1 appeared, so they would be too small to understand it and really appreciated it.

And very few could have more than 30 years old (at that age very few people were gamers - during that period, remember that in 96 computers were not so spread like today).

1996-30=1966.

A 3dfx fan could be born anytime during that interval : 1966-1986. But most of those fans were probably born during 1974-1982.

It's strange, in 2000 he had 6 years and already 3dfx wasn't such a big thing. But it's not impossible, if he has an older friend who teached him about the golden era of 3D (96-98).

And don't worry, I wasn't offended, I just didn't uderstand the poll  Wink

I disagree- one can be a fan of the card just because of, for instance, the technique they use. Of course at the time (1996-1997 for the V1) it was booming as both performance and image quality were good but if a 16 year old person would have interest in hardware, this person could still like the 'old' 3Dfx cards Wink.

I also like the Mercedes C123 (or W123) with M110-engine ... even though it was build before I was born! It's just a matter of what you like and not "if you were there, at the time" Smiley.

I am feeling old in that vote Wink

IMHO every technical oriented kid could turn into a Hardware oriented Gamer. Don't know how many say Quake I in full glory on a 3dfx card, but I assume many did - and enjoyed it all all ages across...
(especially when viewing the competition try it, i.e. on an Aplha OpenGl Driver equipped Riva128, lacking speed and even rudimentary Gamma control *g* , not to mention all those poor S3 card owners realizing their performance shortcoming after waiting months! for any compatible Drivers)

Frankly, I don't know if these brilliant times could be ever repeated with new Hardware.
After witnessing the groundbreaking work of 3dfx, only the mighty ATI Radeon 9700pro managed to give me similar fascination (UT2003/2004 , FarCry) after that...

But I also assume it was the combination of excellent Hardware with extraordinary Games. Latter seem to lack lately - buy a Game, throw tens of Patches at it, Register at useless Spying services, then just throw expensive enough 3D hardware at it...
Times sure have changed and I'm afraid even sensational Hardware couldn't bring the old times back.

I think that Geforce3 was better than 9700 Pro, it was very fast and it was the first to introduce pixel shader(DX8). DX9 was just DX8 on steroids... 8800GTX was also very good and Crysis was really nice.

But nothing compares to first Unreal in 1024x768 on V2 SLI. That was awesome, I can bet on anything that such a leap will never ever be achieved during my life (except if quantum computers will appear).

Quake1 and Carmageddon1. I still play them now and I think they are the best games ever created.

I understand what you are saying, but in computers things are a little different. Who buys computers older than "his time"? For example I started to interact with computers in 94 and I'm not interested on anything older than Pentium.

Sure, I worked on 386 and 486 (I got even a few 286), but Pentium was already launched and I dreamed so much to own one. I have older friends that tell me about commodore, amiga, 286, but I feel nothing. I'm sure that all those computers were great at that time, but not for me.

<--- 1971. Feeling a little old now that it's pointed out. Those were the days though, staying up all night playing Unreal, Quake or DNukem.

I'm a part of the mainstream here, but I did play Duke all night-over with a friend over a 14.400 modem. I remember the lag practically vanished when we both got ourselves 56k modems Smiley

Because of Duke (I loved playing only on keyboard with no mouse!) I never enjoyed quake... up until Q2 emerged and all shooting games went on using mouse as a main input device so I had to get used to it.
