Repair of G1nX's Voodoo 5 5500 128MB
23.07.12 at 18:23:29

Hi everyone,

last Friday I got the Voodoo 5 5500 with 128MB from G1nX for repair.

The card got damaged after testing and some AGP pins were burned. Also after the repair from G1nX the card was not working correctly.

This is how the card looked:
... ... ...

As you can see the card is in a bad shape... Sad

So I didn't test the card an started right away with cleaning an measuring of several connections.

I found out that the wire on memory U504 had contact to a pin next to it. It was bent in that direction. I resoldered it and used special glue to fix all memory wires.

... ... ... ...

I also resoldered some pins on the right of U9 as I couldn't get very good contact with my multimeter.

After that I fixed the AGP pins. B2 is cut and the lower part of pin B3 does have no contact to the PCB and fell off after cleaning the solder.

I used superglue to get the pin back on the PCB and bridged the cuts with solder.

Two further pins also had a damage, I fixed them too.

... ... ...

This is how the cleaned card looks like:
... ...

Provided a tag of my work:
... ...

Let's do some tests shall we? Wink

...
...

Benchmarks against a normal 64MB card:
... -> 64MB card with 2xAA
... -> 64MB card with 4xAA
... -> 128MB card with 2xAA
... -> 128MB card with 4xAA

As you can see the 128MB is faster when using AA and 32Bit and the card is working flawlessly.

@G1nX: Pin B3 fits good and doesn't move, but I would recommend to plug/pull the card not too rough.

Regards,

Thanks Smiley

I will try to get 256MB working on a 5500. This could be very hard work since there are only 4 memory spots per each VSA100 and not 8 like on a 4500 AGP.

So there are two options:
1) try to wire additional 16MB memory modules -> lots of wires...
2) solder 32MB modules -> maybe problems with the strapping

First of all I will try to get a defective Voodoo 4 4500 AGP to see how the memory circuits lead to the VSA100.

That will be an interesting project and I hope you'll be able to pull it off. That would be the first of it's kind.

I can help you out with a defective V4 4500 AGP if you need one for testing.

Thank you for the very nice work on my V5 128Mb card.

Cheers,
G1nX
