CHIP VSA-100 355-0026-320 vs 355-0026-220
18.01.13 at 11:28:14

Hello,

I have had some time and I have worked to see if really there are some difference talking about speed using the 3rd revision silicion 355-0026-320 against 355-0026-220. The version 320 is used only in the last 6k revision (3700/3900 A). According to Hank this chip can handle speed over 200MHz.

For testing I have used the V4-4500 AGP. It only comes with one chip vsa-100 and therefore I can handle much better the heat than using a V5.

Normally V4 comes with thoshiba tsop sdram, not friendly high speed. It can run 175-180MHz. So, the first I did is remove the tsop and add 4ns memory and upgrade it 32@64Mb.  Once done the card already is able to handle speed over 200MHz using stock heatsink. In this case both V4 agp reached same speed stable 200MHz.

17/01/2013

Both cards mount the same memory 4ns.

V4-4500 agp comes with 355-0026-220
...

Unsoldering BGA chip.
...
...

I cleaned the bga balls for marking a perfect base for soldering new chip.
...

New chip VSA-100 355-0026-320 added
...

Testing the card- Here very scared. I did not know if card will boot up and voila... card did! Smiley
...
...

Ran Quake III timedemo 1 200MHz.
...

The cards ready for installing new Heatsink and check speed.
...

NOTE- Now I need to add a new heatsink in both cards and check if there is or not difference using different rev. My guess is I will get same running speed at same VCore chip. Possibly the 3rd revision silicon is more refined but it will be limited for the Voltage or perhaps the last revision can handle much better the heat.

Best regards,
Oscar.

Hi Oscar,

great job Smiley That's what I wanted to do too, but couldn't find time for it.

I also think that the VSA100 is limited by the voltage.

Thanks Dominik.

Anyway, I do not have too much hope that with the new chip card works faster though.

I would love to have one of my 5500PCI's reworked with the 320 chips and 4ns ram.

anyone who can do this for me and with a pricecheck for it?

Great work Osckhar !

very impressive results, and a professional and clean work !
Looks that you are ready to go over 200Mhz with the voodoo's Smiley

did you try more than 200 Mhz ?

Hi,

@Radu,
Seems with a V4 is not difficult to reach 200MHz. Smiley

I need to test the card better but seems the card with new bga chip overclock better.  Cheesy

REV. 230 - 201MHz timedemo 1 Qauke III.
REV. 320 - 206MHz timedmeo 1 Quake III.

Just I need to tune up both cards because I have seen they dont use same bios rev. I need to check it.

OFF TOPIC
@ultima,
Expensive rework. Only to buy 3 CHIPS VSA-100 320 (one as spare), and 10 4ns tsop (2 as spare) - It can cost about 100Euros. Sad Later add the work. Unsolder and resolder 8 tsop - 1h of work plus another hour of bga rework.

For example, I charge 75Euros for a full reballing PS3, it means unsolder / resolder bga chip, and reballing the chip bga with new  lead balls instead lead free).

My spanish friend at his company charge 100Euros for only unsolder/resolder chip bga and tested via X-ray. For example Chip HINT.

I wonder why the 4500 can "so easily" reach 200Mhz, where the 5500 has a lot more trouble with it, any ideas??

Is this because the 4500 uses the 230 chip and the 5500 the 220??

Will check tonight with my cards, have 2 5500 AGP's + 2 PCI's and 1 4500 AGP, very curious. Smiley

As for the costs of the rework.......that's a bit expensive for my taste.
I will check how far I can take the cards with the current config.
How much would it cost to just have the ram swapped??

Well, don't have to worry about syncing two chips for starters.

Hi,

Finally I got some time free and did some test.

Here new heatsink for both cards:
...

V4 Chip Rev. 320 @208MHz

...

Big size  - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4383540/my_mods/v4_4800/208MHz.jpg

V4 Chip  Rev. 220 @204MHz

...

Big size - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4383540/my_mods/v4_4800/204MHz.jpg

Well, now we can say the last revision O/C better in same condition. The rev. 320 reached 210MHz, but it showed some image corrupted . @211MHz card locked up. The rev.220 locked up 206MHz.

The last test will be upgrade the other card with new revision and see if it gets same speed.

Regards,
Oscar.

Great work Smiley But I expected a little bit more, 4MHz isn't worth the effort, in my opinion.

Great Results Osckhar Smiley
A voltage mod could increase the overclockability, what do you thing ?

Combined with those copper heat-sinks a vmod could make a difference.

There is an Asian V4 that runs the VSA100 directly with 3,3V and a small heatsink. Of course the lifespan will be shortened in total running with 3,3V, but I think up to that voltage is "safe".
