so, how do you adjust this thing?

okay, i loaded half life on this thing, a plll 500, asus p3c2000 mobo, 256 mb ram, velocity 100, sb pci 128. i got these drivers, ver 1.4.1.34 and, i assume, directx6. a fresh win98se install. i saw the 3dfx tweak pages in the display settings and its set to desktop, 800x600, 24 bit. i was unsure how to set this card for this game, so before i ran the game for the first time i set the tweak thing to d3d, whiich seemed to have no effect on the desktop apppearance.  i then ran the game, set the game video to d3d 800x600, and started. the opening underground train ride looked great, textures were nice, animation smooth. but when i hit escape to go back to the config screens to adjust some motion controls, the screens are distorted, no using the entire monitor width and bowed outwards on the side. but still usable. after setting the motion controls, when i resume the gams the upper 3/4 of the screen is a jumbled gray blur, with the desktop showing at the bottom. can anyone tell me why that happens? have i done something wrong? are there some settings i can adjust to fix this? if i escape and quit the game, when i start it again gameplay is again great, even through many level loads, though the config screens are still distorted. can i fix this? i'm loving the graghics, much better than my old(er) pc with a matrox card. new drivers? different dx? any help will be appreciated.

How about running Half-Life in OpenGL mode with the latest MesaFX ?
MesaFX is downloadable in the files section, just put the opengl32.dll and glide3x.dll in your half-life folder and you are good to go...

okay, i tried that. i dl the files at the bottom, of the glide archive, mesa fx-vo6109(se) & mesa fx-v06109(se)-opengl32_d3. i extract each to a temp folder so i could look at them. the first zip contained another folder labeled mesa fx-v06109se, which contained 5 files; an info file, 2 executables, cpan and winset, and 2 dll files, glide3x and opengl32. the second zip just contained 2 files; d3 and opengl32.dll. rollo said to 'put' them into my half life folder. how should i put them in there? my half life folder contains the hl executable, some other exe's, some dats, and some dlls, and it contains some other folders, one of which is labeled 'gldrv',which contains a text file labeled 'drvmap'. this has 2 entries, 'default' and '3dfx mini driver', which are the 2 options i see when i go to select my gl video mode in the game config. okay, i think i see what's up here. i'm going to copy the folder with the 5 files to the hl folder and run winset, which i assume will 'put' those 2 dll files into the game folder. did that. no change in game screen. still distorted. also no change in gldrv text file. now i'm going to add a reference in the text file to each of the 2 dlls i added to the hl folder. okay, did that. will try now. okay screens still distoted and message saying modes i selected not supported by gcard. a velocity 100.  ??? what about that 'cpan' file? is that part of this? where does it go? what does it do? is this card just not capable of good open gl? anybody? i'm new at this graphics card thing and floundering a bit. ant help will be greatly appreciated. rob

*ugh*

2 minor points :

- When writing longer texts, try to format them somewhat for ease of reading.
I have a very hard time reading them as they are now...

- read the Instructions coming with MesaFX !
The different subfolders are mainly to separate special Files, that were additionally added and are for Voodoo2 and older Cards.
(MesaFX was mainly written and tested on Voodoo3 and 4/5 architectures, and only later in develpment Voodoo1/2 support was found possible and reasonable)

- the Application found in the latest MesaFX Packages is a Control Panel, in order to comfortably set common MesaFX Options. Think of is as the MesaFX counterpart of 3dfx Tools, sort of a "MesaFX Tools".

@ Robprime

Ok, you made me curious.
It has been a while since I last played Half-Life, so I installed it again and put a Voodoo3-1000 ( which is very similar to your Velocity 100 ) in my 3dfx rig.
This is what I did step by step :
Download the latest MesaFX ( http://www.traumatic.de/pphlogger/dlcount.php?id=FalconFly&url=http://www.falcon... ).
Extract MesaFX to a temporary folder, e.g. c:\Temp\MesaFX
Go to this folder, there is a opengl32.dll. Copy this file into your Half-Life directory ( the main one, not the one where setup.exe is located ).
Go back to your temporary MesaFX folder, there is a folder called Voodoo3_4_5. Inside this folder there is a glide3x.dll.
Copy this one into your Half-Life folder, too.
Start Half-Life.
In the options screen, go to Configuration/Video/Video Modes.
Select OpenGL.
Switch from 3dfx Minigl to Default ( left side ).
Go back to the main menu and select new game ( or load a savegame ).
You see that MesaFX is active when a 3dfx logo apears on the screen.
It ran fine on my machine ( tried in 800x600 ).

Good luck
