Manual uninstall
25.02.06 at 10:45:50
Hello,
I have a couple of questions regarding complete V3 driver uninstall under win XP Pro SP2.
First of all the driver should be removed from the device manager ('uninstall driver'). Then before rebooting, 3dfxvs should be removed from the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\). After that is done, reboot.
Is this the correct uninstallation procedure or did I miss something?
One more question is regarding SSFT. Has anyone tried to run CS 1.6 with mesafx or wickedgl and SFFT A35?
Thanks.

To remove all Registry entries, search for "3dfx" delete all respective Keys or Values.
(those are mainly the DirectX Driver settings, OpenGL and Control Panel)
To be absolutely sure, make cleanup searches for "glide" and "voodoo" (but IMHO nothing should be found anymore)
After the procedure, delete the 3dfx .inf File from the INF Folder. That way, the Voodoo Card will be treated as "unknown VGA Card" and Windows will ask for the proper Drivers (otherwise, it will find and match up the Card's PCI_VendorID and attempt to use the existing old 3dfx .inf File found in the Directory)

All right, so here's the full procedure of unninstall and SFFT driver reinstall:
1. Removed the driver from the device manager ('uninstall driver').
2. Remove any registry folders/keys that contain string '3dfx'.
3. Remove any registry folders/keys that contain strings 'glide' or 'voodoo' (if there are any left).
4. Delete 3dfxvs2k.inf and 3dfxvs2k.pnf from WINDOWS/INF.
5. Reboot.
6. When windows finds new hardware, point it to the folder containing the SFFT package and install the driver.
That should be it. Right?

Yep, that's correct.
One thing I forgot :
- manually search the Windows' System Folder for the 3dfx Driver, OpenGl and Glide files.
- manualy search the Windows' Program Folder for left-over Directories (e.g. 3dfx Tools)
Those should be overwritten when the new Driver is installed, but some of the latest Drivers sometimes used changed Filenames.
After that is done, your System should be absolutely clean of anything 3dfx .

So basically I should search for anything containing '3dfx' or 'voodoo' in WINDOWS folder, correct?

Yep, all relevant files are named 3dfx* and glide*.dll for Voodoo3/4/5 Drivers...
If you are unsure of a File, just Right-Click and view its properties.

I'm doing the stuff... I reinstalled everything and now when rebooted I get new hardwarre found 'Amigasport'???
Before rebooting I was unable to delete 3dfxvs.dll and 3dfxvsm.sys from Windows dir (just after I deleted them they reappeared).
Is that normal? Should I install the driver even if it says it found 'Amigasport'?
Btw I booted in 256 color mode.

If the System finds "AmigaSport", then it still has the AmigaSport Driver's .inf File in its .inf directory. You missed it
(the Windows File content Search available in the Start menu might be helpful for quickly locating it)
It's not important to delete these standard Files (3dfxvs.dll and 3dfxvsm.sys), they're in use before rebooting anyway so they can't be deleted (unless you're in safe mode).
They will be overwritten when you install another Driver.

Can't be! I have checked - Amiga has Voodoo.inf in the driver package, and this .inf file is not present on my system.

*sigh*
Then search the Registry for "AmigaMerlin" and your entire Installation for remaining 3dfx Driver Content.
Still, this shouldn't be needed at this point.
My recommendation is to install the Driver of your choice in Safe mode via Device Manager, this way there won't be any confusion which .inf the System should choose.

No, there's no AmigaSport nor any other 3dfx-related entries in my registry. I really don't know where windows recognizes amiga from...
Right now in device manager I have 'Video Controller (VGA Compatible)' with a yellow '!' by it. I think it'll be safe to install the SFFT driver by updating it rather than using the 'new hardware found' dialog box which pops up.

So I tried installing SFFT via device manager, and while installing the driver windows says it can't find 3dfxICD.dll. SFFT driver package indeed doesn't contain this file. Where do I get the file?

Rename the file to what the System is missing.
Alternatively, you can also use MesaFX, but considering the errors you get, above safe start would be easier to get things going.

I wonder why SFFT package didn't include this file sicne it's required?
And in case I tried mesafx, I should rename opengl32.dll to 3dfxICD.dll and use it (that's the file windows asks)?
