I think I fried my mobo.

Well, I just recieved a Athlon xp 2700 today. I installed the chip and the computer would turn on then quit. After 3 times it started up and booted, but was only recognized as a 1800. I rebooted and went to the bios and raised the fsb as far as possible. Which was only 132 mgz. I rebooted it and it was recognized as a 1700 mgz chip and some change. Well, I was browsing the bios voltage/frequency control. I actually rasied the ram speed to the next option and the computer froze in the bios.

Now the computer wont boot. I get a couple of sounds out of the speakers(like blips?!?!?!?!) And the computer stays on but I get no signal to the screen. I took the cmos battery out for about 5 minutes and put it back in. I started ther computer with no battery. I tried a different video card. I reconfigured the ram and tried every stick by itself. But, it still wont boot.

Anyways, Im not that upset over the mobo. Ive had it for 4 years and it doesnt look like it was going to support the processor anyway. And it was a 8x agp board.

I have a v5500 pci and a agp. Should I stick with the pci or use the agp? The reason I was using the pci was for compatibility with my 8x agp mobo. If I go with the agp version, which mobo should I buy that would support the faster processors, but still have a 5500 compatible agp slot? I wanted to stick with the athlon xp chips(since I already have one) Wink

Let me know what you guys think.

I think if your motherboard is 8XAGP that it's not capable of 3.3V for the V5 AGP. I sounds like you may have lost the EPROM on the BIOS. If it's in a socket, you could write to the BIOS manufacturer and get a new BIOS chip, they're only a couple a bucks + shipping.

I started looking on the net and found the manual online for the board. I jumper had to be pulled to access the higher fsb speeds. Cry

So I was just waisting my time looking around in cmos. Anyways, I looked at the bios chip and its soldered directly to the board??!?!?! Is that normal for some baords?

Also, is there any way to actually check if it is the bios? Or do I just have to get it flashed(or a new chip installed) and try that?

The board actually supports up to athlon xp 3000 chips. Im going to go and try to kick my own ass now. Embarrassed

Is there anything I need to know about running a 5500 pci on a chip/motherboard that supports a high fsb? I know changing the fsb affects the pci bus speed(or does it?)

Also, is it possible to find a mobo that will support a athlon xp 2700 or higher and still have the right slot for a 5500 agp? It just seems like the Agp cards are alot more prevalent and easier to find.

I dont think u fried your mobo. You need to reset the BIOS to defaults and it will be ok. Sometimes it can be done with removing the battery, but the way it should be done is to short the "reset CMOS" jumpers on the mobo itself. Before doing that though, disconnect the power supply from the mainboard, else you there is danger of frying a chip or two.

Tell me the name and revision of the MB and I'll try to find and point you to the jumper you need to short.

Thanks man. But I was messing around with it lastnight and tried that. I unplugged the power supply, unplugged the mainboard, took out battery. I put a jumper on the clear cmos jumper for about 5 seconds, and pushed the power button to drain any power that might have been in capacitors etc. None of this did anything though. Embarrassed

Do not remove the battery Wink

Just unplug the PSU, short jumpers and return them to original position after 2s.

I dont think it will bring much though... Undecided
