Interplay Sacrifice Patch 3 Issues
04.04.05 at 01:00:59

I am having a problem with Interplay/Shiny Entertainment's Sacrifice after I apply Patch 3 which upgrades the game to Build 0678 May 21, 2001 (V0678.05.21 in the Options Menu).  Specifically, the out-of-the-box version is the version of the game in the Dual Jewel package which contains both Sacrifice and Messiah.  Out of the box, this version of Sacrifice is Build 0529 Jan. 8, 2001 (V0529.01.08 in the Options Menu).

I have installed the game and applied Patch 3 to each of the following two systems:

GAMEBOX1
Soyo SY-7VCAE Motherboard
3dfx Voodoo5 5500 VGA Graphics Adapter (with Version 1.04 Reference Drivers)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Platinum
256 MB Memory
Windows 98 SE
DirectX Version 8.1 (4.08.01.0901)

GAMEBOX2
Soyo SY-7VCAE Motherboard
BFG GeForce4 TI4200 AGP Graphics Adapter w/ 64 MB RAM (with Version 41.09 Detonator Drivers)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Platinum
256 MB Memory
Windows 98 SE
DirectX Version 8.1 (4.08.01.0901)

While the game works fine with Build 0529 on both machines, both machines have the following IDENTICAL problems if I apply Patch 3 regardless of whether I choose Direct 3D or Direct 3D T&L HAL:

1.  The text in the vast majority of the menu system disappears while the panels remain as before.  A few entries do still display the correct text.  Navigation still works.

2.  If I click the menu entries to play the Tutorial 1 (or the regular game), I get kicked back to the desktop with no evidence that the program was running.

The readme.txt file on the CD-ROM does say the following for Voodoo5:

"STB/3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500(3DFX Voodoo 5 Chipset)  up to 1600x1200 16-bit/1600x1200 32-bit
-Use Driver 1.01.00
With Driver 1.03.00 Geometry Assist must be enabled.

Directions for enabling Geometry assist

1) Open the 3dfx Advanced Features from the 3dfx Tools tray icon or through Window's
2) Desktop Advanced Display Properties
3) Open the D3d box
4) Open the Geometry Assist box
5) Enable Geometry Assist and reboot the system
6) Run Sacrifice and choose the Direct 3D T&L HAL option"

I could try some different Voodoo5 drivers, but given the fact that the same thing happens with a GeForce4 TI4200 card, I doubt it will help.

The Readme.txt has a Modified Date of 10 December 2001, so it was put together long after Patch 3 was released.  This fact suggests that Interplay intentionally released Build 0529 rather than Build 0678 for this package.

Has anybody seen this problem before?
If so, is the boxed retail version affected or is it the Dual Jewel version (or both)?
Does anybody know a reason for the problem?
Does anybody have a solution for the problem?

With the demise of Interplay, the sacrifice.net site has disappeared, and the Shiny Entertainment site is of no help whatsoever.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  And that's the solution.  I found an ancient Sacrifice forum at StrategyPlanet with a couple of posts from people reporting the same problem.  The solution given to them is to run Patch 3 a second time.

And it worked on both of my machines.  I hate stupid solutions.
