The general rule is; 4 chips on the back is an 8MiB card (16 chips total) and 12 chips on the back is a 12MiB card (24 chips total).
Voodoo 2's usually use 512KiB chips.
But your first one seems special. It either has 12 1MiB chips (most likely) or 8 512KiB + 4 1MiB chips.
I'm willing to bet it's a 12MiB card so you can run them together.

Ok, that's what I figured.
The first card is a 12mb Voodoo2 straight out of the box. The second card is a 12mb BlackMagic Voodoo2. I just found it odd that both were 12mb, but one had less chips. You however gave me the information to understand this.. thank you.
FYI - They
DO
work together in SLI.

The card with no chips on the back is a 3dfx (stb) V2 1000 being a later model the 1mb memory chips were available so they used those.
One interesting question arises what if you soldered on the back of 12 memory chips each 1mb in size. Would you end up with a functional 24mb V2 card? with two of these you would end-up with 48mb in sli

AFAIK the V2 supports only 12Mb of memory, and there is no card with more than 12Mb . ( not even a prototype ).
I have to check the V2 datasheet !

Not true. From Gary's 'Trivia' page:
Quote:
4) A single Voodoo 2 TMU supports 2, 4, 8 or 16 MB of ram
So that's 32MiB for just the TMU's alone. Don't know how much the FBI supports though, thought it was 8MiB max. And an FBI can use up to 3 TMU's.

Did I miss any?

There are still a few non-prod cards not listed on that site like
Rev A0 0900
Rev A0 1500
and maybe there are some other protoype revs out there.
For poduction i don't think it's missing somethin' ...

The reason I ask is because if you look at this animated GIF of both my Raven and Exxe's Raven, you will see there are a few differences... do they mean anything?

I think it's just an earlier revision.

The cards are identical - just components from a differnt supplier.
(and like @NitroX said - probably just a different revision)

That's what I figured... but what's up with the holes in the PCB that are filled on his board? I'm just curious...

This is how a product with a PCB is usually made;
First you have the blank PCB, components are placed on it. But rather than soldering each component seperately, the PCB with it's components rolls over a bath of liquid tin (or whatever they use to soldier) and the backside slightly touches this liquid stuff.
So any small holes on a pcb usually get filled up.
So the question is not 'Why are the holes filled on your PCB' but rather 'Why aren't the holes filled on the other PCB'

Well, that is a good question! I got this card and a few others from an old arcade guru. He said the card was probably pulled from an arcade machine and could be special somehow. Probably not, but it's on eBay either way right now
