Quake 1 Engines
02.03.10 at 00:19:09
I was just looking around at all the different quake engines are out there for use. They seem to have alot of added features as far as lighting, audio, etc. I downloaded the "darkplaces" engine. But I havent tried it out yet.
I just set up the computer again after the wife decided she was going to relocate it a few months ago. Anyways, I downloaded alot of user maps and a few episodes and was planning on trying them on a different engine. So I was wondering what engine you guys use if is different from the original glquake.

Sure! I tried to customize it as best as I could, so I added rygel hi-res texture pack also. It was amazing

I tried Darkplaces and it was amazing. Its amazing what is being done with 13 year old material. For me, darkplaces is a little slow. And its very slow with real time lighting enabled(which looks fantastic!) Joequake seems to run well, although its not as pretty as darkplaces.
Darkplaces with arwop looks great, but isnt very playable. I tried arwop with joequake and got a gltexture error. It seems strange that joequake runs marcher fortress smoothly, but doesnt run arwop(the first level). And darkplaces doesnt run marcher almost at all, but it does run arwop.
All in all it seems like everything is working fairly well considering none of this stuff is actually official.
I think ill try tenebrae next.

Tenebrae is even slower than darkplaces+rygel textures, it's not optimised at all, runs almost the same on GF3 and 8800 Ultra.

Guys take a look at this effect. Is this done with a custom engine? I check within original GLquake version and there was just a static texture, not even animated. I'm just curious
