Is there an option in yout system's BIOS to set which takes precedence during startup, IDE or SATA?  That might be the trick.

AND...some bios' are very picky, you have to select that exact harddrive as 1st boot, not the option "harddrive" in general.

I have seen this mostly happen with dc/dvd players being a problem, but could be for hdd as well
