Voodoo 1 in Win98
28.12.04 at 15:06:08

Hi everybody,

Probably I'm going to ask a frequently asked and bit stupid question, but I can't solve the problem by myself.

I've installed a Voodoo 1 card into windows 98. Windows recognizes the standard PCI VGA card and the Voodoo 3d Accelerator (sound & video support).

In despite of this I can't get my desktop to more than 16 colors (The check box for 3daccelator-support is already switched on).

I've got the feeling Win98 knows the Voodoo card is present, but doesn't make use of it. It doesn't make any difference for resolution and colors of the desktop when I install the Voodoo card or not.

Who can help me ?

Kind regards,
Kees

Your having a problem with your 2d card drivers, you will have to identify what sort of card it is and install the correct drivers.

The 3dfx cards usually will not function if the desktop is set to 256 colors or less.

Gary's right.

But you seem not to understand that the Voodoo1 (Voodoo Graphics) card is only a 3D accelerator.  It won't run Windows or the Windows desktop.  It is designed to sit beside a 2D card and only works when you play GLQuake or Tomb Raider or a similar 3D game.  You need a seperate 2D card for you Windows desktop.  And that's why Gary correctly says that you need to install the correct drivers for your 2D card.  You must have one (perhaps on the motherboard) or else Windows wouldn't let you see the desktop at all.  It is currently running a standard Microsoft VGA/SVGA driver that came with Windows.  You need to identify the chipset and install the correct drivers for it.

Your Voodoo Graphics is a good card (I'm about to fit mine in a DOS box I've built) but it's only for gaming and not for Windows.

98lite with
629K
of free conventional memory in full DOS mode using QEMM 9.0 (or 628K with UMBPCI.SYS providing real mode for FastVid) with SmartDrive, CD-ROM, CuteMouse, sound support and UniRefresh all loaded high.
