New Retro Rig configuration
11.05.12 at 20:20:02

It has been a while since I've fiddled with 3dfx's stuff, so I think it's about time I'd put my lose components into a dedicated Voodoo system. However, I'm not sure which system configuration will yield best performance.

I've currently got hardware laying around from which I could assemble these configurations:

Asus P4GD1 motherboard with Intel 915 chipset
Intel Pentium M 780 @ 2.26GHz
Asus CT-479 socket converter
2x 2GB DDR 400
Intel X25-M 120GB SSD (SATA)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
ATI Radeon HD 5770 2GB PCI-E
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI MAC

Or

ABIT NF7-S v2.0
AMD Athlon XP2500+
3 x 512MB PC3200
Seatage Barracuda 7200.11 500GB (PATA)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
ATI Radeon X850 XT PE 256MB AGP
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI MAC

Which of these two configurations would be recommended?
TIA!

I have both mobos- those are a couple of the best for 478 overclocking.

It would be interesting to see benchmarks running the Asus platform with the SSD- if you're able to get it to work. I had issues a year ago getting a Corsair F60 SSD to work with the Abit board.

For Glide games - both are more then capable. For everything else, Intel: 1) silent and cool (CPU + Video card) 2) more RAM 3) SSD

I've made a slightly different approach and merged my retro system with my server.. Roll Eyes

Its current configuration:

Microsoft Windows 2003 R2
Asus P4GD1 motherboard with Intel 915 chipset
Intel Pentium M 780 @ 2.50GHz
Asus CT-479 socket converter
Kingston HyperX 2x 2GB DDR 433
Intel 330 120GB SSD (SATA)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
Voodoo 5 5500 PCI MAC (SFFT 1.9)
Adaptec RAID 6805 PCI-E 8x
Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001, 3TB; RAID6 12TB

I had no trouble whatsoever using the Intel SSD on the embedded ICH6 controller.

Glide game performance is outstanding! Even N64 (Glide) emulation runs smoothly! Cheesy
